More than Howard Jones, more than Pete Carroll, it is John McKay who embodies Trojan football and whose looming legacy reigns supreme. The "I Formation," "Student Body Right," "Tailback U"—McKay's iconic contributions to college football in general and USC in particular are the stuff of legend. Even beyond his 127-40-8 record, his 9 conference titles, his 4 national championships, there's also his place in history as the Yogi Berra of the gridiron, ever ready with a witty quote. Not to mention his key role in bringing integration to Alabama and the SEC. All of that immense success can be traced back to one year: 1962. After two transitional seasons at the USC helm, McKay summoned his men to greatness with an undefeated 11-0 record and an epic 42-37 Rose Bowl win over Wisconsin. And he never looked back.
Proudly presented here is John Harvey McKay's very own ring from that first national title in his illustrious career. Engraved inside the band is the monogram, "JHM," which is attricuted to McKay as he would sometimes use when signing correspondences, and which is still seen as shorthand in Trojan online forums when referring to the coach. (A memorial "JHM" decal was also featured on Tampa Bay Bucs helmets in 2001 after McKay's passing.) Likewise, the only other extant 1962 USC ring we're aware of—that belonging to captain Marv Marinovich—featured the identical monogramming style. Manufactured by the John Roberts Co., McKay's 10K-gold, size 9-1/2 ring features ornate Rose Bowl imagery on the top and a raised-relief Trojan Shrine (a.k.a., Tommy Trojan) on one shank. NM condition. Accompanied by a 1997 purchase LOA.
