Before Adoree' Jackson exited Sun Devil Stadium late Saturday, he was asked to lead the Spirit of Troy marching band. This allowed for a few Arizona State fans, standing just a few feet away in the stands, to heckle Jackson as he stood and wielded Tommy Trojan's sword near the tunnel.
His performance then was as good as it was on the field that night.
I caught nearly all of the exchange between Jackson and the fans with my audio recorder. Here's the transcript below:
Adoree’ Jackson: "We got the W. That's all that matters. Right, baby? We living in the moment tonight. We got 24 hours!"
Fan: "I bet you will with the coach tonight. Are you guys going to drink it up?"
AJ: "We’re going to go back to that film room."
Fan: "Are you guys going to party with your coach tonight?"
AJ: "We should. ... Have a sleepover at Coach Sark’s house, you never know. Team bonding, baby."
Fan 1: "You wield that sword. … Go pro."
Fan 2: "He doesn’t know the words. He doesn't know the words."
Fan 1: "C'mon, baby. Where's your pride? Where's your Trojan pride?"
AJ: "I don’t need to say it. I don’t need to say it. I leave that to Chris Brown and Trey Songz. That ain’t my thing. ... What are y'all going to do tonight?"
Fan: "I'm going to go watch the UCLA replay because they played really well."
AJ: "We played good tonight too, huh? We played OK tonight? We didn’t do so good? Average?" ... (No response) "I figured. Always room to improve, baby."
Fan: "Keep holding that sword."
AJ: "Want to hold it? Want to hold it?"
Fan: "What?"
AJ: "Want to hold it? Want to hold it."
Fan 1: "Go pro, c’mon, make that money. Or are you already making that money?"
Fan 2: "Just like Reggie Bush. He’ll go pro and then no one will ever talk about you again."
(Jackson laughs.)
Fan 1: "How much are they paying you to go to USC?"
Fan 2: "How many gifts have they’ve given you so far?"
AJ: "This W right here, that's the only gifts I need, baby. (Jackson Laughs.) Let's go!"
AJ: "Y'all be easy. Y'all be easy." (Conquest concludes and Jackson walks over to the hecklers and shakes their hands.)
Jackson was asked afterward how he was able to remain so calm through the incident.
"That's just always been me," he said. "I really don't too much care what somebody else has to say. I'm going to talk to you anyway, just be the bigger person, the nice guy out there. Keep a smile on your face because that makes you (them) more mad than anything. That's just how my mom is and my dad. They never really got angry much, so that's just how I am now."
