I am a big proponent of doing that. College kids need their sleep and they just won't go to bed at 9pm so they can get up at 6. They will stay up until 11,12,1 or 2 and only get 5 of hours sleep. So they will be tired all week and then be a little worn out during the game. Yes, if it was a pro camp setting that had a curfew at 10pm it could work fine. But these are college kids.
Also, you literally do not have the willpower to push yourself as hard at 8am. You can try pretty hard, but you always will push yourself a little harder from 12pm to 9pm at night. Very few people are rowdy that early in the day. It is just hard to get fired to hit, block and work at the highest levels. And you don't play the game at 8am on Saturdays so you should practice at a time that is closer to game time.
