Majority Leader Steve Scalise informed Republicans in a closed-door meeting that he was dropping his bid to be House speaker, creating more uncertainty as GOP lawmakers struggle to coalesce around a replacement for Rep. Kevin McCarthy.

Scalise’s unexpected announcement came just a day after a majority of House Republicans nominated him for the top job.
