Okay, so in my many years on this site I've never asked a question about coaching strategy. I have no pretense about being on that level. But in reading this recent comment from J Nansen I'm wondering if a light bulb came on for me and just want confirmation:
"If we’re looking for outside linebackers, the ideal, you’re looking at Porter (Gustin), outside guys, big, tall rangy, that can set the edge and come off the edge as pass rusher."
My preconception for a classic outside linebacker is someone who has cover skills, and inside is a man with more muscle to contend with the run. But Nansen appears to be saying that in Clancy's scheme, the outside guy is the muscle (and, hopefully, has killer quicks for rushing the QB) in order to pin the offense inside ("set the edge"). And the inside guys are actually the speed guys ("athletic") with quick enough feet to dodge the offensive line, jetting in with quick disruptive angles to the ball carrier, while also having the cover skills in the first 20 yards of the secondary.
Am I reading this correctly?
Thanks for your thoughts.
