Clay Helton was asked during his weekly Sunday media call about how his relationship with USC AD Lynn Swann has grown over time. He didn't say anything revealing or out of the ordinary, other than that they meet every Monday to discuss the game and the team.
But here were his full comments. Full transcript of call upcoming, along with a follow-up story.
On his relationship with Lynn Swann ...
"It's been great. One of the things that I've really appreciated in both ADs that I've had the opportunity to work for is they're football guys. Both of them won championships. And I visit with Mr. Swann every Monday and get a chance to sit down with him and talk about the game, talk about the team, bounce thoughts off him, and he's been so supportive. He's been through probably every scenario both college and pro you could probably have and has been the best of the best in his profession, so to be able to sit down with him each and every week and be able to roll ideas off of him and be able to have that much support is, I think, critical for our success. I mean, I love that the AD is a football guy, knows the guy, gives us everything we need to be successful and is willing to take the time. I've always thought the greatest gift you can give somebody is your time, and he gives me his time each and every week."
Is there an example of something he's suggested to you guys that you've used?
"When it comes to some of the football stuff, his greatest knowledge is the wide receiver position, so you know, whether it's techniques or fundamentals or little things that he sees as far as the wideouts, it has always helped. And then just from a certain situation that may be going on with a player or a certain member of the team, being able to ask a question, 'Hey, when this happened to you, what did you want from your coach or what did you want to be able to see?' He's always there, whether it's a personal issue, whether it's a football issue, it's always good to bounce those things off him."
