Notes and observations from today's practice ...
USC was in shorts and shoulder pads. Su'a Cravens told us Saturday after the Arizona game that every practice for the remainder of the season (or at least the regular season) would be in shorts.
1-on-1:
Adoree' breaks up a well-thrown deep ball to Darreus Rogers. Adoree' got his hand in there at the final second. He seems to pick up on receiver tendencies well. Not sure why he and the other CBs were playing so far off the Arizona wideouts over the weekend.
Deontay Burnett hauls one in over the top for a TD.
Adoree' prevents De'Quan Hampton fro catching a pass down the sideline. There was a lot of contact and probably pass interference.
Steven Mitchell catches a deep ball and immediately spins free for a TD.
Olajuwon Tucker blocked a punt, prompting Helton to yell, "That's my favorite sounding ball right there."
11-on-11:
Justin Davis is tackled in the backfield and appears to suffer a stinger. (He soon returned.)
Aca'Cedric Ware runs up the middle and is popped by either Matt Lopes or Osa Masina. Ware got a lot of work, likely because Tre Madden didn't participate in team periods. Wouldn't read into Ware's involvement.
Lamar Dawson scoops up a fumbled snap.
Kevon Seymour tackles Davis in the backfield.
Ware cuts outside for a big gain.
7-on-7:
John Plattenburg breaks up a low pass from Cody Kessler to Darreus Rogers.
Kessler throws it behind Mitchell over the middle.
Kessler then goes deep to no one. Rough sequence there for the USC QB.
11-on-11:
Jalen Greene catches a out to the far sideline.
Kessler hits De'Quan Hampton on a crossing route.
Davis runs into a wall.
A play-action pass to Tyler Petite in the flat is broken up.Would have gone for a loss anyway had it been completed.
***
Kessler goes deep to Mitchell and it's dropped.
Kessler short-arms a pass to Greene and it's dropped. The offense was really in a funk today.
Kessler throws it behind Mitchell over the middle.
Kessler makes a decisive throw to the sideline and hits Hampton.
***
Another play is spoiled by a bad snap.
Kessler completes another deep ball to Hampton but it was very underthrown.
I'm starting to get the sense that something is going on with him physically. His throwing motion just doesn't seem like it's totally there, from his windup to his release. His velocity isn't where it was this spring.
