Notes and observations from practice ...
11-on-11 (scout):
Cody Kessler hits Steven Mitchell Jr. over the top for a TD. He targeted Mitchell a lot today, which I'm guessing wasn't a coincidence. Tuesdays, though, often look much different than Saturdays.
Ykili Ross picks off a Kessler heave into the end zone intended for Jalen Greene. Ross hasn't practiced at corner much, but he's used in single coverage quite a bit. He looks like someone that can contribute in the defensive backfield this season, at corner or safety.
Tre Madden runs off tackle and cuts inside for a nice gain. He looked relatively fine today, despite only participating in service team periods.
***
Kessler hits Christian Tober on a deep out.
Kessler hits Rogers up the seam.
Kessler goes deep to Mitchell but it's behind him and Mitchell can't hang on. I think both of them would like that play back.
11-on-11 (team):
Aca'Cedric Ware ran hard today. (I think he could have been a good alternative vs. Stanford when Madden was out. He brings a lot of the same type of physicality.)
Rasheem Green sacks Max Browne.
Leon McQuay jumps in front of De'Quan Hampton and gets his hand on a pass over the middle. Solid instincts from McQuay.
***
Kessler connects with Mitchell on a deep post.
Kessler finds a wide open Rogers after a blown coverage.
Justin Davis, who got the bulk of the carries today, looked spry. He had a long run up the sideline after cutting outside. His footwork has been sharp since he's returned.
***
The team was pretty business-like today. It wasn't down but wasn't especially vocal either. Interestingly, nearly every pass he caught, JuJu Smith-Schuster seemed to mix it up a little with various defensive players. It was as if he was trying to get under their skin, perhaps to ignite them.
Had some interesting interviews with Kessler, Clay Helton, Su'a Cravens and Tee Martin today. Will have transcripts from those later.
