Notes and observations from Tuesday's practice ...
Adoree' Jackson practiced exclusively on defense today.
7-on-7s:
Cody Kessler's first pass is picked off by Hawkins. Another curious decision, as he threw this one into heavy coverage. We rarely saw this last fall, of course. Kessler was intercepted more than normal (for him) beginning in spring. Might be a byproduct of him getting used to different receivers and/or learning to be more aggressive.
Field goals:
Alex Wood - hits two from 28 and misses two from 40.
Matt Boermeester - makes two from 28 and makes his one attempt from 40.
Keith Heyward implores Biggie Marshall to hustle to the next drill. "Don't be the last one."
***
11-on-11:
First-team lineup on defense - Tell, Hawkins, Adoree', Biggie, Cam Smith, Sarao, Cravens, Felix, Delvon, Temple and Townsend (The first-team safeties during an earlier 11-on-11 were Hawkins and McQuay.)
The second team DBs were Kevon Seymour, Jonathan Lockett, John Plattenburg and Matt Lopes.
First-team O-line - Toa, Mama, Tuerk, Viane, Banner
***
Tre Madden is stopped by Temple for a short gain.
A screen pass to Steven Mitchell goes for a short gain.
Aca'Cedric Ware drop a well-placed ball downfield from Max Browne.
Dom Davis breaks the line and runs down the middle of the field for a long TD.
Ware is targeted for another screen and catches this one.
Osa Masina stuffs ware near the line of scrimmage.
Browne starts right and then comes back left and makes a strong throw off his back foot to Tyler Petite. Really impressive play from Browne, who was under pressure from Greg Townsend.
***
Unfortunately, my notes are a bit limited because the majority of practice was spent working on the pre-practice pressers with Sark, Kessler and Cravens.
As Sark exited the field, he humbly smiled in the media's direction and said, "We had a good practice, for what it's worth."
With that said, there was a somber, drab mood permeating the practice. It was missing the energy we've grown accustomed to.
USC will practice again Wednesday morning. Sarkisian and players on offense and defense will be made available to the media.
