I know Clay Helton’s comments last night that USC was taking its time on Bru McCoy's waiver request raised some questions. This is what I'm hearing on that front.

The waiver, as Helton noted, is complex and involves multiple components. They've worked through most of them, but McCoy's health situation has just taken precedence for the time being. The reality is even if the NCAA cleared him tomorrow he still would not be able to play for many weeks, so there's simply no rush to complete it. The expectation is the NCAA would return a decision in a matter of weeks once it receives the request, and if USC feels there's a chance for him to play later in the season that could still get completed by that time. (The waiver, whenever it’s filed, remains a longshot to begin with).

But, as Helton has said, McCoy is working through this health matter that has prevented him from practicing all summer. He's been in all team meetings, he's gone to class. USC is just being very cautious otherwise until this is behind him. And in the meantime, the waiver just isn't a top priority.

That's the extent of it. Nothing controversial here.
