USC announced a multi-year extension today for baseball coach Dan Hubbs. Here's the full release from the school:
LOS ANGELES – After leading the Trojans to two-straight winning seasons and the team’s first NCAA Regional appearance since 2005, USC baseball head coach Dan Hubbs, has earned a multi-year contract extension, as announced today by USC Athletic Director Pat Haden.
"Dan Hubbs has proven over the last three years that he is the right coach and person to lead USC baseball back to prominence. Taking over a program in need, Dan has quickly led us back to post-season play, while also guiding the team to success in the classroom and in the community. He understands the expectations in front of him, and I could not be more excited to announce an extension of his contract,” said Haden.
Hubbs, who took over the program just two days before the start of the 2013 season, has turned it around quickly. In just his second season at the helm in 2014, he led his alma mater to its first winning season (29-24) since 2005, narrowly missing the postseason. In 2015, he bested that mark, leading the squad to a regular season record of 37-19—its best finish since 2001. The team advanced to the regional final and finished the season 39-21.
A four-year Trojan letterman (1990-93) and former All-American, Hubbs first joined the program as associate head coach in 2012.
“I am very thankful to Pat Haden and the entire administration for having faith in our staff. We can’t wait to continue to move the Trojan baseball program back to its place of prestige,” said Hubbs. “This is not only great for me, but also for my family. We love it here and love being part of the Trojan Family.”
A pitching coach by trade, Hubbs led the Trojan pitching staff to seven shutouts in 2015, good for 11th-best nationally. The Trojan pitching staff was also ranked fourth in the Pac-12 with 453 strikeouts and second with 134 batters stuck out looking. He has developed multiple pitchers during his tenure at Troy, including current Trojan ace Kyle Davis, who had the lowest ERA (1.12) of any returning Division I player in 2015.
In his combined four seasons at USC (one as associate head coach and three as a head coach), he’s had 10 Trojan pitchers drafted, led by 2014 third-rounder Wyatt Strahan. He’s also led two freshman pitchers to Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American status.
Hubbs also coached Garrett Stubbs to the Johnny Bench Award in 2015, given to the nation’s top collegiate catcher, along with four Trojan All-Pac-12 first team selections, the most in the program since 2002.
Additionally in 2015, his team hit .296, the highest team average since 2002. The Trojans also stole 94-of-127 bases, tied for the fifth-best in program history.
A stellar recruiter, all five of Hubbs’ recruiting classes have been ranked nationally.
Prior to joining the USC staff, the 44-year-old Hubbs spent 12 years (2000-11) as the pitching coach at California. He regularly produced team ERAs among the lowest in the Pac-10, and three times his pitching staff set school records for season strikeouts. In 2011, when the Golden Bear baseball program was set to be discontinued, Hubbs' pitching staff set a season-strikeout record of 475, en route to a trip to the College World Series—the program’s first since 1992.
After graduating with a bachelor's degree in finance in 1993, he went on to a seven-year (1993-99) minor league career with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies. He finished his career with a 27-16 record with nine saves and a 3.75 ERA. In 427 innings, he struck out 436 batters.
