Democratic Senate candidate Jaime Harrison has closed the gap on Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham's poll lead in the South Carolina Senate race, according to a poll released Wednesday.

Both Harrison and Graham had 48% support from likely voters in a Quinnipiac University poll conducted Sept. 10-14. The sample includes 969 likely voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.2%.

"A victor by almost 16 points back in 2014, Senator Graham stares down the first real test of his Senate tenure. Outspent and accused by some of being a Trump apologist, he is in a precarious tie," said Quinnipiac University Polling Analyst Tim Malloy.

The poll shows that the race remains as tight as the last time Quinnipiac measured the race in August, when it found each candidate with 44% support among registered voters.

Other recent polls measuring the Senate race have shown Graham with a slight lead. A Morning Consult poll from late July and early August found Graham up by 1 point, while a Gravis Marketing poll from July found the incumbent senator up by 7 points.

Harrison, the former chair of the South Carolina Democratic Party, had $10.2 million in his war chest at the end of June. Graham, who has represented South Carolina in the House and the Senate for 27 years, had $15 million at the same time.

Election forecasters at the Cook Political Report earlier this year moved the South Carolina Senate race from being a "likely Republican" outcome to "lean Republican."
