II think we need a proven coach who knows how to instill a culture. PC had a culture, Saban has a culture, Harbaugh definitely has a culture. I would agree with the poster who wants to move away from the OC genius hires - I want a strong culture built around a hard hitting fast and furious defense. USC will always get QB's and skill players - they are bred locally ... the best offensive players will improve the most when they practice every day against a fast, hard hitting, aggressive D ...
I would re-phrase Chase's earlier comments in this way, we need to stop incubating. Guys like chase and others saw this in the ladder part of the PC era - PC tried to incubate up and comers like Sark and Kiffin. Post PC, USC took the experiment one step further by promoting incubated assistants to head coach. If we had someone w USC ties that could come in and establish and identity for this program that others would follow that's fine but it doesn't look like that guy exists ...
The good news, the last 2 guys were so bad at instilling a culture we have none. The temptation to hire someone to carry the torch is gone - the fire has completely burned out. That's what we're seeing on the field - we play great some games terrible in others. The good news is that this makes it easier for a new hire to come in and put a stamp on the program right away.
