I posted numerous times that they wanted to hire Helton from day one. Despite what PH said today, ucla was the cover they needed to do it. Once they got the win they had to pull the trigger. They would have done it if they had beaten UO. They could not wait until they potentially lost to Stanford. This was their window.
I also posted numerous times that USC has NEVER in its history hired and paid a big time coach. They were not going to start now despite what OSU, Bama and UM did with their hires. Sark and Kiffin reinforced that and even PC for that matter. Dont think that for one minute they seriously looked at big $ NFL guys, they didnt.All this stuff about Kelly, Gruden etc was complete internet, talk radio, fan driven baloney, just like last time when Sark got hired. But, if Helton fails, I guarantee you the same nonsense will permeate these boards.
Last, I posted a few times that there is a resentment in HH to the rank and file fan and alums on the message boards. Tessalone let the cat out of the bag. There is a huge animus toward the criticism toward Haden, they have circled the wagons around him. The same resentment existed and goes along with the hiring of Helton. HH felt challenged and insulted that the rank and file did not share their support of Helton. Part of this hire was giving the finger to the proletariat USC fan/alum base. HH is run more like a country club under Haden than people realize. The way they handled the NCAA and hirings of Sark and Helton conform to this MO.
None of this info accrues to me. I just had a great source who kept telling me it was Helton all along and why.
