On the tenth anniversary of that terrible day our large church in Marietta, GA had a patriotic memorial service for those who lost their lives in that tragedy. Six guests of honor were NYC firemen from the stations near the twin towers. These were all big guys who came in full dress uniforms and were seated at the front in our huge sanctuary. The church was completely filled with members, each carrying a small American flag.

At the end of the program the guests stood at the front of the congregation to say a few words of thanks. These tough New Yorkers said how touched they were by the service. One remarked, "We thought people might have forgotten." The first officer who spoke was unable to continue as tears streamed down his face. Here they stood, as memories surfaced of that horrific day. Six strong, brave men who had weathered one of New York's worst days were overcome with emotion and could not continue. They were not alone as all of us in the sanctuary joined in their sorrow. The pastor concluded the service as we all sang " God Bless America".

In memory....
