..a political captive of whatever party is in the White House or Congress. It was set up to be a court that determines adherence to the constitution. So determining that abortion is legal (for example) was not a capability of the Supreme Court for a number of reasons , most importantly that abortion was never a part of the constitution.
The Supreme Court was intended as an independent part of the USA governing body. Today its a means of pushing the country further into whatever direction a constitutionally deaf President want to take it. So yes, immediately some saw Scalia's death as a means of rigging the court that has increasingly not adhered to constitutional interpretation, but to personal interpretations that could become the rule of the land.
And rigging the court was tried several times, including the esteemed FDR who tried to get the Supreme Court changed to add two more judges , who he and his party would determine, so as to rubber stamp his programs and intended direction of the country. Now of course Obama swoops in like a vulture to do the same. Well the President has the right to offer his choices for his board, but he does not have the right to determine the Supreme Court judges independently. So expect the Congress to push this can down the road much like economic problems are done so by many politicians. Ironic, isn't it?
