Something is on Adoree' Jackson's mind. That much was clear as he exited the practice field Wednesday and addressed reporters about Cal and his ever-changing role. The typically carefree Jackson was less than enthused about his recent play.
The moral of the story, as usual: Adoree' wants more.
What do you make of the matchup with Cal quarterback Jared Goff?
AJ: “We’re going to have to stay in good coverage and get great pass rushing … to get him off his game. … There’s not many tendencies you can pick up. He’s a great quarterback. That’s why he’s considered the first quarterback that’s going to get picked off the board. He goes though great read progressions down the field.”
Goff is throwing more interceptions this season. Is this a good opportunity for you to get your first one?
AJ: “Credit to those guys who get great pass rushing on him, make him hurry a throw. That’s one of those things that we have to do as well. If you don’t get that great pass rushing he’s going to complete those balls.”
How do you feel about your play at cornerback this season?
AJ: “I feel like it’s all right, nothing more than that. It’s just all right.”
What do you need to work on?
AJ: “Just do the little things, technique-wise. That’s pretty much all I can do to get better.”
What was it like for you to have a lighter load this past weekend?
AJ: “It’s not ideal, what I would like, but at the end of the day it was good on my body. I wasn’t out there doing too much. I did get the ball, a couple screens, I just have to make something work. At the end of the day, it’s not what I would like.”
How do you feel about primarily playing defense?
AJ: “At the end of the day I’d rather play defense, God willing, go to the NFL. I’d rather play cornerback than receiver.”
Is it difficult to transition from playing predominantly offense one week to predominantly defense the next?
AJ: “It’s not a problem. I still get he extra work in defensively. Playing offense, I feel like that’s one of those things that’s like second nature. I feel like you could just go out there and play offense. If you’re an athlete, you can just go out there and play. But defense, there are some things you really got to work on. I don’t feel like it’s difficult at all.”
Will you play offense this week?
AJ: “I’ll be out there on offense, if I’m needed. I always have a package every game. It just depends on if I get in or not.”
Where do you feel you are this season kick returning?
AJ: “Nowhere. I had one against Stanford but that’s nothing to talk about. It got called back. Other than that I haven’t even gotten past the 50, I don’t believe. I don’t feel like I’m doing great, kick return-wise. It could be all aspects, you never know. It could be me, it could be blocking, it could be opportunity, how they’re kicking the ball.”
