Coach Clay Helton on Monday announced USC's quarterback competition will extend to fall camp. Helton met with Max Browne, Sam Darnold, Jalen Greene and Matt Fink this afternoon and informed them of his decision.
"There were a number of open positions on our team this spring where players performed very well, including the quarterbacks," Helton said. "I met with them today and told them that, based on how well they played, I have decided to continue the quarterback competition into Fall Camp. I will wait until then to name a starter."
We spoke at length with Browne, Darnold and quarterbacks coach Tyson Helton about this scenario following the spring game.
"It is what it is," Browne said Saturday. "I would have liked to have it done at the end of the spring, but at the end of the day it’s the nature of having two quarterbacks playing very good ball. ... I’ll bust my ass this summer moving into the fall and I’ll be ready to go."
Darnold added: "The way I’ve played has showed the coaches my ability and that this isn’t as easy a decision as some people would have thought."
