News from the first day of fall practice ...
Jalen Cope-Fitzpatrick was not at practice today. Sarkisian said that he has the tight end focusing on academics instead of football.
A source inside the program says that he believes Cope-Fitzpatrick is doing well, taking care of business and everyone is just waiting to see. Summer classes end on Tuesday, Aug. 11.
We noticed Chris Brown getting increased reps with the first team. There was actually a lot of rotating among the linemen, much more than we saw in spring. Bob Connelly said he's looking to identify what combinations play well together.
There was a lot of rotating in general. Sark noted that the third string nearly received as many reps as the first team. He said he now has 105 players (that's including walk-ons) at his disposal.
Each of the incoming blueshirts participated today: freshmen Deontay Burnett, Daniel Imatorbhebhe and Clayton Johnston and redshirt junior Taylor McNamara, who transferred from Oklahoma.
A source close to the program says that USC believes Imatorbhebhe, who transferred from Florida, will end up redshirting this season (It was earlier reported that he could be fighting to become immediately eligible.)
There was an emphasis on creating turnovers today, Sarkisian said that was one thing USC wanted to improve on this year from last.
Adoree' Jackson played defense today. He will start the first 11 practices on defense before switching over and practicing exclusively on offense for six practices. Sark said he wants him to focus on the installation before working at receiver. The plan during the season is for Adoree' to work on both sides in every practice.
USC had a couple new faces practicing on punt returns. The rotation began with Adoree', followed by Steven Mitchell, Isaiah langley, Su'a Cravens. Burnett was also with them but we didn't see him return one.
Leon McQuay took the majority of first-team reps at safety opposite John Plattenburg.
Cody Temple tool the majority of reps ahead of Claude Pelon.
Matt Boermeester got the first field goal reps, followed by Alex Wood.
JuJu is requesting that he now be called JuJu Smith-Schuster. The latter name is the surname of his stepfather, Lawrence Schuster, who has helped raise JuJu since he was 4.
Tyler Vaughns and commits Trevon Sidney and Frank Martin attended practice.
Sunday's practice is open to the public and begins at 6:30 p.m.
***FYI*** After each practice this season, we are going to report newsier information ASAP in Quick Hits. Footnotes will continue to include general notes from the workouts as well as observations and opinions.
