News updates following Thursday's closed practice at the Coliseum...

Steve Sarkisian met with just a few reporters following a 90-minute practice that he described as a "walk-through of a walk-through."

The players walked up the tunnel in shells and shorts.

Sarkisian said safety Ykili Ross, who remains in a sling, is out with a sore shoulder. He doesn't expect him to be out much longer and did not give the indication that he would be redshirting this season, as there are plans to use him on defense and special teams.

"We want to get him back as soon as possible," Sarkisian said.

Sarkisian again discussed the fallout from Salute to Troy, noting that it's been good for him to self-reflect and that he has used the incident to build a closer relationship with the players.

Saturday's practice at the Coliseum will be a mock game. Sarkisian said player rotations will be based on the staff's rough sketch for the season opener. He said there will also be mock injuries and, therefore, spontaneous substitutions.

USC didn't practice at the Coliseum sooner because of the Special Olympics.

The team will hold a closed practice Friday with no media availability.
