News updates from today's practice ...

Tre Madden (knee), Leon McQuay (knee) and Viane Talamaivao (knee) did not practice.

Clay Helton says he's hoping Madden can play vs. UCLA. He said McQuay has a torn PCL that won't require surgery but could keep him out for four weeks. (He's missed the past two games.) Helton is hoping McQuay can return for UCLA as well.

Helton said Talamaivao is still "extremely sore." He said there's not a lot of concern about him missing practice because of all the reps he's had throughout the year. Talamaivao suffered his injury on his fourth play vs. Colorado and proceeded to play the remainder of the game. Helton said he had 50 CCs of fluid drained form his knee.

Helton said Cam Smith's ACL will keep him out 7-9 months from surgery. Helton noted that Smith played 18 snaps after his injury.

Claude Pelon is practicing without a brace and moving around well.

Adoree' Jackson worked more on offense than he has in several weeks. He spent a greater portion of practice on defense, mind you, but he'd been getting almost no reps on offense lately.

Uchenna Nwosu took a significant amount of first-team reps at weakside linebacker alongside Anthony Sarao. Olajuwon Tucker and Osa Masina took a lot of reps together with the second team. We might see Sarao playing a lot of snaps and alternating between middle and weakside, while Tucker and Nwosu essentially substitute for one another at separate positions. (Does this make sense?) I'm guessing Masina will get some run too but it appears like he'll be fourth in the rotation. Michael Hutchings appears to be the odd man out. Helton said he's looking for the top four.

We asked about Aca'Cedric Ware being used as a third option with Madden out. Helton intimated that Ware is next in line but he's going with a two tailback rotation.

Coming up in They Said It: Adoree' Jackson, Justin Wilcox, Olajuwon Tucker, Steven Mitchell Jr. and Anthony Sarao.
