Remember the Alamo? Nah, remember the Billboard!
In 2002, Oregon, the de facto king of the Pac 10 at the time, threw up a huge side of the building billboard showcasing their Oregon receivers right smack in the middle of LA only miles from the USC campus. I used to drive by it on my way to work. Its intent was to draw the interest of recruits and it was a definite insult to USC and taken as such by the team.
USC was coming off a mediocre first campaign season for PC and heading to Autzen. They went up with a chip on their shoulder and proceeded to announce their arrival and the ascension of King Pete beating Oregon 44-33 and launching Carson Palmer's Heisman campaign.
After the game the receivers, headed by Kareem Kelly, posed victorious on Autzen's field mocking the billboard image.
That was the start of something really really special. And the last time an Oregon billboard showed up in downtown L.A.
