In case you care, USC did hold a practice on Sunday and this is what I noticed.
Injuries and attendance
Due to yesterday’s news, an injury update was lost from at practice and USC released a report via email later in the day.
We posted that update to the board yesterday but here it is again.
C Max Tuerk, torn knee ligament, out for season
DE Claude Pelon, knee sprain, doubtful
WR Steven Mitchell, ankle sprain, questionable
CB Iman Marshall, abdomen, OK (practiced today)
Here’s a detailed account of what TrojanSports.com saw in regards to injuries and attendance.
Max Tuerk did not attend practice and as expected, USC has Toa Lobendahn playing center.
Claude Pelon had shorts on, wasn’t wearing pads (at a practice with full pads) and his left knee was wrapped.
Steven Mitchell didn’t wear a helmet but had pads on. He was limping a bit and didn’t do much.
Iman Marshall was in pads and participating. He seemed fine.
Darreus Rogers was participating as well and seemed fine.
Roy Hemsley was absent from practice but it’s not injury related and he’s fine.
Practice Notes
Sunday practice started around 12:30 PM at Howard Jones and featured full pads.
The Trojans started with a warm up/walk through period where the offense and defense separates into two fields. The offense was on the north field and the defense was on the south field.
After that drill, the majority of the team went through a stretching period on the southern field. A few players went to return kicks and punts for the punters and kickers on the northern field.
The Trojans then ran through the bags before separating into some different groups. On the west half of the south field, the defensive line do some different drills. The quarterbacks, on the east side of the south field, threw passes to Justin Davis, Ajene Harris (who, obviously, was out and not really participating) and Darreus Rogers.
On the north field, USC works on special team, punt coverage and return.
After that, the team switches into position group work. The quarterbacks, wide receivers and secondary players team up for some one-on-ones. The defensive line, linebackers and offensive line all work separately and against scout team players.
The live 11-on-11 period starts at 1:08 PM
Kessler hit Isaac Whitney and Ronald Jones on impressive plays but the USC defense seems in control of the beginning of the period. The defense is controlling the line of scrimmage, stuffing runs and pressuring Kessler.
Browne has a little bit more success. He hits Deontay Burnett on a fifty yard bomb for a touchdown. He also finds Jalen Greene and George Katrib on some nice plays.
But the USC defense still seemed to hold the slight advantage. The front seven actually seemed stronger and the secondary made some impressive plays.
After some 11-on-11, USC goes back to the walkthrough period against scout players. The Trojan also get get a little fast and go, sort-of, live against the scout team.
USC then does 7-on-7 before returning to positional group work. The quarterbacks and offensive line work together on snaps.
Practice ended shortly after this. I left for a few minutes to make calls (phone calls are not allowed on the field) and prepare. That's because of the realization that Sarkisian wasn’t at practice and his employers were (which is unusual). So I might have missed something late and I apologize for that.
Of course afterwards was when we met with Pat Haden and Clay Helton in Heritage Hall. Thats when the announcement was made that Steve Sarkisian would be placed on a leave of absence and Clay Helton would be named interim head coach.
