Is that there are a lot of problems, and they can’t just be easily addressed through recruiting great players. USC has been doing that for forever, and is about to sign yet another great class.
But we’re not doing enough with these players once they get to campus. It doesn’t matter who you blame (I mean, it does, but that’s not the point of this post), but it’s clear from our three biggest losses over the past two years that USC is not on the same level of the elite programs that compete for the playoffs. And I don’t think we’re that close.
We were good enough to (barely) win what looks to be the clear worst power 5 conference, but the program needs to continue to get better, and a lot better, or that’s all Helton will be able to accomplish here. Until then, any preseason hype and hope about making a playoff will only ever be that. No top draft pick of a QB will be enough to change that on his own, which unfortunately is what we tied our hopes to this year.
