USC Football is dead. D.E.A.D. Dead. Not that games won't be played, those will never cease. But competitive football as seen between 2002-2008 specifically. Clearly a run that we had during that time is probably once in a lifetime, but if any school could do it again it's USC. Everything is in place. The facilities are better than they were during the PC dynasty. They were an absolute dump (I saw them). Imagine those teams with the new facilities? Unstoppable. And we were basically unstoppable back then anyway. Then things started going sideways...
Egregious, unwarranted sanctions. Does USC put up a fight? Minimally. If they really cared to sustain they would have filed an injunction the day the sanctions were announced. Gone to battle. Miami did it and it worked. Ohio State did it. North Carolina did it. They fought and got off with slaps on the wrist. USC bent over, complimented the COI for being upstanding people, and they shoved the sanctions even further up our ass. Once that happened, we were neutered. Our balls were cut off. The pussification of USC began.
This led to a long list of embarrassing decisions that led one ESPN commentator to call USC a "Clown College". Any recourse from USC or the SID? None. ESPN is still welcome on campus without the request for an apology. Want to know why? Because it's true. Incident after incident, mostly involving coaches who are supposed to be the adults in the room. It's the players who held things together. You have Georgia having players arrested prior to EVERY season. Oklahoma has a guy beat the shit out of a woman and he's a contributing member of the team today. If it had happened at USC, every media outlet around the country would have parked on campus for months. Josh Shaw lies about saving a kid from drowning and is suspended virtually an entire season as well. For lying. Not beating up a woman. USC is held to a different standard. Yet we continue to bend over and spread our cheeks without question.
The biggest example of this to me was the 2014 USC vs UCLA game. I'm in the stands, awaiting the band to take the field before the game. UCLA sends one of their walk-ons to mid-field to do whatever he has to do to the band leader if he tries to stab the field. PHYSICALLY STOP HIM. HE WAS TOLD BY THE UCLA COACHING STAFF TO DO THIS. More than one player and a former band leader told me if that happened when they were in school they would have blown him up, even if they got suspended. They didn't care what happened to them, they didn't want them, their teammates, or their school to be disrespected. And we took it. And then no more than 5 minutes later, the UCLA Flag Fairies ran right through our team down our sideline. We did nothing. We took it. And then UCLA went onto the field and beat our ass. I will never forget how embarrassed and disgusted I felt. The pussification of USC was complete.
We are the laughing stock of the country. We are a Clown College. We deserve everything that happens to us because we deserve it. We could be the biggest, baddest university in the country when it comes to athletics and academics but Haden and Nikias don't want that. They're scared of athletic success overshadowing academics. Football success scares them the most. Between 2002-2006 you couldn't get a ticket to the Coliseum. It was the hottest ticket in town. 92k every game. Swagger. Excitement. MONEY ROLLING IN. Booster memberships at an all time high. And in less than 5 years they destroyed it. DESTROYED. And when the team was down and on life support, they unplugged it with the hire of Helton. The Holiday Bowl proved that. 7 practices when you can have 15? What coach makes that decision? One that has no idea what he's doing. Promoting GA's. UCLA could be hiring Tom Herman as their HC if Mora leaves. I really hope they do. We deserve that put in our faces.
I'm proud that USC is growing academically. It adds value to my diploma. But my love and passion for USC as an alum is tied to athletics. I can tailgate with friends and family before games. I can cheer and scream and root for football, basketball, volleyball, whatever sport I want. Support my university. Wear my cardinal & gold proudly. But that love has turned to anger, dismay, and disgust at the blatant attempt to destroy something so important to me. Something that I was born into and have loved my entire life. And the destruction is from the inside which makes it even worse. Self-destruction. Blatant, pre-meditated destruction. I wish Haden and Nikias would come out and publicly state that the goal of mediocrity of the high-revenue sports has been the plan from the beginning since it was overshadowing academics.
Think about it... You can put a product on the field that will skyrocket booster memberships yet they choose not to and memberships plummet. You can put a product on the field that 92k will show up for every week, yet they choose to remodel the Coliseum to accommodate 18k less. Why? Because 45-50k in a 75k stadium looks better than in a 92k one. They fear athletic success. They fear USC being known as an athletic university. And because of this the fire and passion for USC football has been snuffed out. Not a flicker. Not a spark. Just darkness, sadness, despair, and disappointment. They burned USC football to the ground.
But hey, according to Tim Tessalone my opinion doesn't matter. I'm just one of those $100 donor who hangs out on message boards.
Welcome to the new era of USC Football. Lose on.
Well, there's my rant... I will say this though... If I'm wrong I will come back and apologize profusely. I just don't feel I'm wrong.
Once this thread dies out I will be taking an extended break from posting. I need it. I'm emotionally drained.
I wish you all a very happy and healthy new year. May we come together under happier circumstances involving USC. We deserve it.
