- -The secondary did their job, for the most part
“They caught two deep balls on us that I felt like we could have defended. But for the most part, we did our job. Still a lot of room that we have to improve and get better. We have to get better at getting off blocks and better at tackling.”

- -His freshmen performed well
“I thought they held their own. We’re acclimating them now because we’re going to need them all season. So they’ll play a lot against Idaho, they’re going to play against Stanford and whoever else we have after that. I feel right now they did alright. but we have to watch the film and I’m sure there’s a ton of stuff we have to get better at.”

- -Freshmen platooning will continue at DB
“I really want all my players to play and I feel like they all can. When you play against a team like that and I think there were eighty plus plays, maybe ninety plus plays in that game, you can’t just stay with one or two groups. Everybody has to play. It’s attractive to us in recruiting, you come to ‘SC, as long as you know your stuff, you’re going to play.”

Heyward used platooning as a recruiting pitch as well
- -“I just said it and if they’re watching the game, they’ll see it.”

- -John Plattenburg responded after missing time in camp
“It’s good that he got back healthy, I’m glad that he responded. Platt’s a tough kid, physically tough and mentally tough so he was able to bounce back from that injury. You don’t want to sit out too long or somebody else is going to get your reps.”

- -Chris Hawkins played smart and excelled
“He did a good job. Chris did what he always does. He makes the right calls for the defense that we’re playing, he gets aligned, he plays with good technique and good eyes.”

- -Iman Marshall had a strong freshman debut
“He played good, he was physical. The one thing, I thought he tackled well, he was physical in his coverage. There was one assignment bust but he’s a freshman playing in his first game in the Coliseum. So he did a good job. He has to clean up some technique stuff but he’s going to be fine.”

Biggie Marshall

- -He was nervous in his first game
“At first, it was kind of shaky, I was kind of nervous at the beginning of the game. But once I got accustomed to the game speed and stuff like that and understood I have my brothers around me that’s going to help me out even if I mess up. I enjoyed it a lot.”

- -He still has to get adjusted
“This is one stepping stone. I have to play an away game and stuff like that, get adjusted. So I wouldn’t say I’m fully adjusted yet, but I’m happy that I got the first game jitters out of the way. But I can’t wait to see what the future holds.”

- -He thinks his performance was just acceptable
“I feel like it was acceptable for my first game but there’s a lot of stuff I still need to clean up on. It’s my first game as a freshman so I don’t want to judge myself too hard because I’m a big critic of my game. But I appreciate having the opportunity to be out there and play a game in front of the Trojan family.”

- -Arkansas State was faster and more physical than what he faced at Poly
“More so the speed of the game, the dudes are more physical than they used to be so you always have to be adjusted to that part of the game and stuff like that.”

- -He knows he’s going to continue to play.
“We platoon. We have a lot of great players out here, a lot of older dudes that’s helping me show the ropes like Kevon Seymour and Adoree’ Jackson who have been in this situation. All I’m trying to do is learn from them as much as I possibly can and just continue to work hard.”

- -Fall camp helped him tremendously
“Fall camp helped me become a better player. Understanding that you have to stay consistent and it’s always a continuous battle. You always have to outplay the previous play. That’s what I try to do is continue to work hard and continue to grow as a player.”

- -He was impressed with his secondary and defense
“We got four turnovers so I would say we got an A+.”

Greg Townsend

- - He believe the defense can still improve
“There’s always room for improvement, the defense did well, we created four turnovers but like I said, we have to go back and look at the film and try to figure out what we can get better at.”

- -He felt rusty
“I felt a little rusty but it was good to get out there with my team, good to get back into football first game back. It feels great.”

- -He felt the team was rusty
“It’s the first game and the first game, everyone is going to come out rusty. It’s been a while since we played football against someone else, banging against our own O-Line for the last few weeks. So there’s always room for improvement.”

- -Being a starter has him feeling fortunate.
“It’s great. It’s great to be a part of this program, it’s great to be a part of this university and I’m just blessed.”

Viane Talamaivao

- -Sacks were communication issues
“It’s obviously something we need to improve on. It’s just communication issues. It’s something that’s easily fixable because you have to work on it in practice. I think it was just jitters coming from the first game. They kind of ran some delayed blitzes were they would come late. There’s no excuse, we have to pick it up and we’ll be better next week.”

- -Guys playing new positions was not the issue
“I felt like things went smoothly. We’re going to rotate guys. It’s what the coaches have planned, so it’s we’re going to do and I think its just the matter of finding the right mix.”

- -This game helped the line grow
“Everyone gets experience, everyone gets their feet wet, gets all the anxiety out. It’s the first game so I think Sark said we had 13 true freshmen play today and we rotated a bunch of guys on o-line. That just adds onto experience. Like I said, we’ll find a mix either next game as we continue throughout the season of what works. Games like this are great because everyone gets to play, we get to evaluate everybody and everyone gets to see how they do in game situations.”
