USC Dominates Pac-12 Football All-Century Team (from the Pac-12)
LOS ANGELES--USC dominated the Pac-12 Football All-Century Team, with Trojans composing nearly half of the 50-player team.
Twenty-four of the team’s players are Trojans, as is the head coach. No other school had more than 5 players represented. The team was unveiled on the Pac-12 Network last night (Dec. 1).
John McKay is the team’s head coach. Ronnie Lott is the Defensive Player of the Century. All 5 of the teams’ running backs are Trojans, as are 4 of the 7 offensive linemen, 3 of the 5 wide receivers and linebackers and 3 of the 4 safeties. Reggie Bush was the only player named at 2 positions, running back and returner.
The 24 Trojans on the Pac-12 All-Century team are: QB Matt Leinart, RBs Marcus Allen, O.J. Simpson, Charles White, Reggie Bush and Mike Garrett, WRs Keyshawn Johnson, Lynn Swann and Marqise Lee, TE Charles Young, OLs Ron Yary, Tony Boselli, Anthony Munoz and Brad Budde, DE Willie McGinest, DT Leonard Williams, LBs Junior Seau, Richard Wood and Chris Claiborne, CB Joey Browner, Ss Ronnie Lott, Troy Polamalu and Mark Carrier and RET Reggie Bush.
The team, celebrating the Pac-12’s 100th anniversary, was selected from a pool of 125 eligible players and 10 head coaches by a panel of 119 former players, coaches and media members. Collegiate career accomplishments and accolades were the primary factors taken into account by the voters. Five players each were selected at quarterback, running back, wide receiver, defensive end, defensive tackle and linebacker, while there were 7 at offensive line, 4 at both cornerback and safety, 2 at tight end and 1 each at kicker, punter and returner.
Of USC’s Pac-12 All-Century honorees, 12 are in the College Football Hall of Fame and 7 are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Five won Heisman Trophies and there also is a winner of an Outland Trophy, Lombardi Award, Thorpe Award, Butkus Award and Biletnikoff Award.
Several members of the 50-man team, including Trojans Lott, Allen, Yary and Browner, will be saluted on the field during this Saturday’s (Dec. 5) Pac-12 Football Championship Game between USC and Stanford.
