Ryan Kelley, Rivals' fifth-rated pro-style quarterback in the 2017 class, announced Tuesday evening he has de-committed from Oregon. This is notable for a few reasons.
In just a 24-hour span, USC and Oregon are now both fully exploring alternative options at quarterback.
While Kelley (6-2, 173, Chandler, Ariz.) doesn't currently hold a USC offer, he was actually near the top of the Trojans' board as of February, along with Tua Tagovailoa (Alabama), Tate Martell (Texas A&M) and Braxton Burmeister (uncommitted).
Sometimes there is a domino effect in recruiting, and Kelley's decision might be the result of one and/or cause one. Tagovailoa was universally understood as a USC lean prior to pledging to Alabama this week. Perhaps now the Trojans and Kelley will take a more serious look at one another. Moreover, there's always been a natural connection between Oregon and Tagovailoa, who attends the same high school that produced Marcus Mariota.
As we noted in this week's podcast, expect USC to seriously pursue a quarterback commitment from the 2017 class. In the past week alone, the Trojans offered Stanford commit Davis Mills and watched Jack Sears of San Clemente High work out.
Kelley and Mills are the only two pro-style guys among the aforementioned quarterbacks.
Here is Kelley's tweet:
As always, stay tuned.
