The writing on the wall seems to be that no key DC/OC or other assistants will be coming. Why would they? If you're an up and coming assistant, why would you believe Helton could keep this job for more than 2 years? Anyone with half a brain would realize that a guy like Helton does not have a long list of connections, having such little experience.
Icing on the cake is that recruits are decomitting and USC's recruiting power will not be as strong as recent years. Not a huge issue in itself, since USC will get good classes no matter what. But a staff as weak as the one Helton is poised to build needs world class talent in order to have a competitive shot.
Helton won't embarrass USC off the field. He'll say all the right things in the media. The players will love him. But this program is going to be mediocre for the foreseeable future. Eventually his "genuine" nature and positive message will fall on deaf ears as losses pile up and players tune him out.
But hey, at least we'll win the right way. Look, I'm no football expert, but it doesn't take a genius to realize that success as a coach all boils down to teaching and X's and O's. And Helton hasn't demonstrated excellence in either. Nothing you say about his character is ever going to matter much in the long run.
