Putting aside the debate on whether this was a good hire (I think we can all agree it's risky, but who know if it works), Clay is a coach we can at least all get behind. He's an easy guy to root for and will run a good ship, if he wins he'll unite the fan base.
But I worry Pat will undermine any success he might have, and we really need Pat to step aside for Clay to get this done. Putting aside the conspiracy theories about Pat and even his hires - the fact that he is meddling to the extent of gameplanning and diagramming plays with the staff, Clay calling him "Coach Haden", listening in on play calls, etc. is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE (not the mention the insanity during the Furd game last year). It's the same crap Barry Alvarez does in Wisconsin (and he's a hall of fame coach), and he's run off two good coaches and ended up with Paul Chryst, someone who's been there before and will put up with that nonsense. This is more akin to what Dave Brandon apparently pulled in Ann Arbor, and we know what happened there. Pat is not a football coach and he's not the face of the USC football program. Clay Helton is the coach. Pat - if this is your guy and you've decided to stay on as AD, I implore you to please stay out of the way and let Clay put his own stamp on this program . It's clear part of the reason you hired Clay was b/c he was an adult (unlike the last 2). Treat him as such.
