Bru McCoy was a longtime USC lean.

The university was the desired destination for his family, and former running mates and good friends JT Daniels and Amon-Ra St. Brown are already there. But by the time McCoy elected to sign with the Trojans, sources tell me his personal preference was to actually go to Texas. He was surprised by how much he enjoyed his time in Austin and was thoroughly impressed with the program.

The X factor for USC was Kliff Kingsbury.

I'm told McCoy was sold on how Kingsbury would use the five-star wide receiver in his Air Raid offense. When Kingsbury officially decided to leave for the NFL, just one day after McCoy began classes at USC, McCoy immediately grew concerned with what the Trojans would do on offense and what his role would be in Year 1. Specifically, he was not confident he would be featured much given the caliber of USC's incumbent starters and the possibility that the Trojans' new offense, which remains an unknown, wouldn't be as WR-heavy.

Thus, the rationalization could be made that if McCoy’s not going to play a lot in 2019 -- think Joseph Lewis two years ago -- it wouldn't be the biggest sacrifice to sit out a year at Texas. The opportunity to try his hand at playing defense, which the Longhorns promised, is also a big selling point for him.

McCoy is said to be fond of Coach Clay Helton, but the instability in the program is obvious and apparently became a growing factor. Horace McCoy, Bru's father, said he has been advised to not comment on the matter, presumably because it could negatively impact his son’s quest to be granted a waiver to play right away.

That wouldn't be an issue at USC, of course. But so many others ultimately convinced Bru McCoy to leave without any promises of a 2019 season. He’s now in the NCAA transfer portal and, for the second time in three weeks, following in the footsteps of a coach he never played for.
