LOS ANGELES – The Big Ten postseason awards were released on Tuesday (May 20) and seven USC baseball players earned honors.
Ethan Hedges led the way, earning a spot on the All-Big Ten first team, followed by Brodie Purcell on the second team, and then Caden Aoki and Abbrie Covarrubias on the third team. Andrew Johnson and Augie Lopez picked up nods to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team, and Andrew Lamb earned the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. Aoki and Hedges also earned spots on the conference’s all-defensive team.
Hedges has been the Trojans’ leader all season, putting up remarkable numbers both at the plate and on the mound as the USC closer. Hedges batted .346 through the regular season, leading USC with 12 homers, 54 RBI, 53 runs scored and a 1.076 OPS. In addition to starting every game at third base, Hedges served as USC’s closer this season, posting a 2.57 ERA in 14 appearances, with nine saves and a .180 opponent batting average.
Purcell served as the Trojans’ most prolific reliever this season, posting a 2.23 ERA in 36.1 innings out of the pen. The sophomore righty also notched four saves in his 24 appearances on the mound, striking out 45 batters while walking just 17 and holding opponents to a .168 batting average. Purcell had 19 appearances where he did not allow an earned run and only appearance all year where he gave up more than one earned run.
Aoki was the anchor of USC’s starting rotation this season, pitching to a 4.46 ERA in 14 starts and 80.2 innings on the mound. Finishing the regular season with 74 strikeouts to just 12 walks, he led the Big Ten in both walks per nine innings at 1.34 and strikeout-to-walk ratio at 6.17. Aoki posted some of the biggest performances of the season on the mound, tossing 7.0 innings without an earned run against Vanderbilt and then throwing a complete game two-hitter against Minnesota and 7.0 scoreless innings against UCLA during conference play.
In his sophomore season, Covarrubias locked down the second base spot for the Trojans all year, batting .300 in 52 starts with 30 RBI and 32 runs scored. He hit three homers, two triples and 10 doubles, while also leading USC with 11 stolen bases. Covarrubias was at his best during Big Ten play, posting a .333 batting average with 14 RBI, 16 runs scored and nine extra base hits during conference action.
Johnson blossomed into one of USC’s most trusted arms on the mound during his freshman season, pitching to a 4.41 ERA as both a reliever and starter for the Trojans. The rookie righty also did his best work against Big Ten foes, compiling a 3.49 conference ERA with 20 strikeouts and just three walks in 28.1 innings pitched. Johnson’s overall walks per nine average of 1.71 was second in the Big Ten to only his teammate, Aoki, and his strikeout-to-walk ratio of 4.42 was also fourth in the conference.
Lopez earned himself a regular spot in the lineup as a designated hitter as the year progressed, finishing the regular season with a .306 batting average in his rookie campaign. Lopez posted 11 RBI, seven runs scored, seven doubles and two homers this season, making 21 starts and appearing in 36 total games.
Lamb earned the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award after establishing himself as a leader for the Trojan ballclub in his sophomore season. After battling through injuries early in the season, Lamb has been one of USC’s hottest bats down the stretch, posting a .344 batting average in 23 games played. He has served wherever needed on the field, spending time behind the plate and in both left and right field. The Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honors student-athletes who distinguish themselves through sportsmanship, ethical behavior, academics and citizenship.
