Football Question of the Day (2/23)

Is Clay Helton off to the best coaching start in USC history?

The narrative has been thrown out there because Helton’s 21 wins are the most of any USC coach after his first two seasons. He also had the benefit of coaching the most games through two seasons. His .777 winning percentage two seasons in actually ranks fourth since 1921, when USC played its first 11-game season. Helton’s total record, including games in which he was the interim coach, is 27-10.
  1. Which coaches had a higher winning percentage after their first two seasons?
  2. Who has the most wins after 37 games?

Football Stephen Carr out for spring practice

USC running back Stephen Carr is out for spring practice after suffering a herniated disc last week while running, a source tells TrojanSports. He’s expected to return for training camp.

Carr underwent a procedure Thursday to have a large knot removed from his back that had begun to cause intense pain for the rising sophomore. He played through the issue during the second half of last season after returning from plantar fasciitis.

Carr’s absence leaves USC with just two healthy tailbacks for spring, Aca’Cedric Ware and Vavae Malepeai. Incoming freshman Markese Stepp is a fall enrollee.

There are other suitable options to switch positions, including Dominic Davis, who redshirted in 2017 as he transitioned to cornerback after spending his first two seasons at running back.

USC Hoops!

What an impressive display of basketball and taking care of business on the road at Utah in a very pivotal game of the season. Came out on top 74-58 (believe we were 5 point dogs going into the game). They practically held the Utes in shackles from the start of the game and answered beautifully in just about every single run the Utes had in them.

One brilliant display was an alley oop from JMac to Elijah Stewart midway in the 2H right after a timeout was called by CAE. After that, USC went on a masterful run and held Utah scoreless for over 8 minutes.

All the credit goes towards CAE and his staff for keeping the team focused and playing an inspired + complete game of basketball for almost the entire game. First time we've swept the mountain schools since the conference reform. Yeah, there were some plays that made you cringe and throw your hands up in disbelief but that is the game of basketball. Glad we have the players + Coaching staff in place regardless of all the nonsense that has gone on away from the basketball court. It takes a special group and a collective effort as a whole to play as well as they did not only today but for the majority of the season. Sole possession of 2nd place in the P12 is right in our grasp. Now let's beat the Bruins. FTFO!

Some thoughts on the Basketball payoffs…

For those with visions of this latest flap over Basketball payments. it is not the same thing as the USC Football sanctions of 2010. First off, USC was the prime target of that incident. In 20-20 hindsight there was a target on their back. If one recalls the basketball program was a secondary issue and the NCAA dismissed any further sanction there above what USC had done in self sanction. In fact that same 20-20 might have said the USC action was over-ranching.

In these cases there were multiple (over 30 programs) that were at issue;. two of the biggest were Louisville, and now we are hearing Arizona. Add in other big names Duke, UNC, Kentucky, Alabama, et al and USC is likely much lower on the list. USC has also self sanctioned in a way by dismissing coach Tony Bland and sitting player Deanthony Melton for a year. That is unlike the football program that did not self sanction. And USC has already done its own investigation and is prepared to kick back IMO. that’s also unlike th Football sanction.

So what's ahead…the big issue is what the NCAA does with the big violations…Louisville et al. Determine what punishment lies there and then act downward for lesser violations after determining whether they were known or not known violations. There can be great ramifications on some schools and even take down some conferences …e.g. multiple violations in ACC, SEC, Big 10, etc.

All of this will not likely affect this year with March madness coming quickly. The effect, if football is an example, will take several rounds of pushback by the schools and IMO result in a 1 year or so delay. This is my educated guess from prior actions. The NCAA has a much tougher issue on hand, especially how they handle this.

2018 starting Defense

I am going with our nickel line up because we were in that about 70% of last year.

DT- Christian Rector
NT- Marlon Tuipulotu
SAM- Jordan Iosefa
WILL- Palaie Gaoteote
MIKE-Cam Smith
PRED- Porter Gustin
Nickel- Ajene Harris
CB- Jack Jones
CB- Biggie Marshall
FS- Marvell Tell
SS- Isaiah Pola Moa

I know the coaches are looking for a longer body to slide in at nickel but they love and trust Ajene so he gets the start. The SS position will be a good one to watch, I just like the size and physicality IPM brings at the spot, u can play him in the box for 8 man fronts. Love to see wat everyone else thinks. Fight On!!!

USC at Colorado BBall

Where USC is now The Trojans are now ranked #36. That should make USC a #10 seed. However ESPN and FOX both are discounting USC while saying only Arizona, ASU and UW get in. Hmmm…this does sound like the mumbo jumbo applied to the final 4 in football. The facts: USC is second, 1 game behind Arizona and 1/2 game ahead of UCLA. They lead UW by 2 games and ASU by 3 in the PAC-12 playing similar schedules. Overall they have 20 wins- only 21 teams of the 45 above them have more. They have an SOS of 49. Only 21 of the teams above are better. I get the feeling that the pseudo ex-spurt gurus are Sudoku fans and not real analysts. The FOX guy talks of important games being a home victory versus the top 30 (of what?), a road victory about the top 50 in neutral games, and a win on the road vs. the top 75. USC has 4 of those so far. Does this mean losing close games versus good teams is worthless?

The game: Back to being a pulse pounder with the score 60-58 with 7:16 to go. But USC played heavier D to crank it up to a 15-6 finishing stroke. Final was 75-64., Keep in mind that Colorado was 26-5 in their most recent games (6-1 in conference this year) at home. This now makes it 2 straight USC wins at mile high and 4 straight vs. the Buffs in 2017-2018. SC shot over and into the zone defense. Hitting 10-20 3 pointers and 55% overall. 32 points were scored in the paint. USC caused 13 turnovers including 9 from steals resulting in 17 points. USC now sits in #2 spot in the PAC 12 at 11-5 pending the result of the Utah game tonight with UCLA..

The heroes. Metu (21 pts-3 Rebs-2 Blks-1 stl) and McLaughlin (18 pts-4 Rebs-7 Asts-1 Blk-2 stl) carried the team. The bench scored 18 points with the Thornton as a standout, in his best game IMO as a Trojan, had 7pts-2 Rebs-2 asts-3 stl). He spelled McLaughlin for valuable minutes. The team D held the Buffs from coming back in that 15-6 finish spurt. The team in general handles the rarified atmosphere (give me some air!) without a problem. All starters but Jonah Matthews played 28-35 minutes apiece.

Next- Utah…right now 1 1/2 games behind USC, 17-9 overall and 9-6 in conference. They are 4-2 in conference home games. Both USC and UCLA handled Utah in LA by 17 and 18 points respectively. A preview might be seen tonight in the Utah game vas UCLA. Go Trojans -2 more regulation wins…..
