How to evaluate Mater Dei Players?

Last night was the first time I watched Mater Dei play this year. They have amazing talent if you go position by position. It's basically unfair in a Highschool setting. With that said, it seems like it would be very difficult to evaluate their talent given their depth doesn't allow other teams to gameplan against one or two players which is typically what occurs when other Highschool teams have an elite player or two.

In watching Amon Ra St. Brown last night you could tell he was the most talented receiver on the team but is he really the best national prospect by a wide margin? He may be but it was just hard to tell. If I were a scout I'd highlight his crisp routes and very good hands. I think his ability to get in and out of breaks was top notch but I'm not sure about his top end speed. He also isn't tall so I don't see him being a guy that just beats you with size. He seemed like a better Stephen Mitchell but if you go back to Highschool I'd imagine Stephen Mitchell was as good as any prospect.

Would love to hear thoughts from our board or the mods.

Thx

What I've been told about Julius Irvin (12/18)

I spoke to another relative of Julius Irvin's today who wished to remain off the record.

Here's what he said the latest on the Rivals100 DB is:

"My gathering is that he doesn't really feel that USC wanted him. I think he was recruited more heavily by Notre Dame and Washington out of his top three. I don't think he feels that USC was really interested in him. I don't know if that's going to correlate to him choosing someone else or if he's going to stick with what he always wanted to do which is play at USC. So I don't know. He wanted to take an official visit to USC and they wanted him to take it in January. So I think he felt slighted maybe."

Irvin had planned to sign early but it seemed the USC coaches wanted him to sign after the early period. The result is that Irvin will sign early anyway. Maybe it will be USC, maybe it won't.

"He's going to sign early, he's going to be signing on Wednesday and I know in the beginning, USC wanted him to sign in February but since then they said, okay, you can sign early. He just didn't understand why there was such a problem with him signing early. Maybe he took that as if the team didn't really want him. He didn't get a home visit from the head coach. So I don't know, I don't know how USC does it's recruiting. He wasn't really given the opportunity to take an official visit before the signing date. So I'm not sure how he takes it. He makes a decision tomorrow."

In addition to being told that Julius Irvin had always dreamed of playing at USC, I was also told that his father, Leroy Irvin, is a "huge" USC fan. Yes, despite the fact that Irvin played college football at Kansas, he adopted USC football as he became a Southern California resident and a Rams Pro Bowler.

I changed my prediction on Irvin because of this news. I was told earlier he was very much into USC and pretty much locked into a commitment with the Trojans. But after hearing this news, I have a hard time believing he'll commit to USC.

We'll find out soon enough.

Listened to an interview

with a Carmans coach. He said out of all 3 schools, Jackson likes different. Jackson says to his coach that S.C. is different. He loves the music and loves to cook. They’ll have dinner tonight he says and go from there. Just what I listened to. Coach is one of the coaches in the army game and says S.C. is a dark horse

The latest on Markese Stepp and USC...

I've spoken to multiple sources I trust and all feel USC has a good chance to sign Rivals250 tailback Markese Stepp.

Most were hesitant to say that they believe USC is the leader but all were confident the Trojans could be the winner here at the end of the day.

One person I trust did say that he believes Stepp will eventually pick USC and was confident it would happen. Based on what I've heard from others, I'm not ready to run with that yet.

Stepp preps at Cathedral HS in Indianpolis. He was previously committed to Notre Dame from June of this year until December.

He plans to take an official visit to USC this weekend and has a long standing relationship with USC tailback coach Deland McCullough. McCullough is a long time friend of Stepp's family and played football with Stepp's father at Miami of Ohio.

What someone I trust is saying about this weekend...

I've been told by someone I trust that this official visit weekend is going exceptionally well and the Trojan coaching staff feels they have a great chance with every recruit that has stepped on campus (yes, including five-star OT Jackson Carman.)

Stay tuned! Tomorrow I'll be trying to get everyone who was on campus on the phone for an update.

Thoughts on the Mater Dei-De La Salle HS championship game-

MD's coach Bruce Rollinson was 0-4 going in vs DLS with his team hoping to show they are the best in Cal, and likely the nation. The weather in Sacramento was windy and cold and any thoughts of licking the goal posts even if "Double dog dared " was bypassed. The wind should have hurt the passing team (MD) and aided the running team (DLS) but MD blasted DLS 52-21. The prime interest for me were the actions of USC possibilities QB J T Daniels, WR Amon-ra St. Brown from MD, and DT Tuli Letuligasenoa from DLS.

MD looked poised and sure the whole game. DLS actually fumbled the ball 10 plus times and lost 4 . They probably would have lost 6, if not for refs calls. MD which has huge depth, and a great OL made Tuli L 's opportunities to shine minimal, but he made 3-4 good plays IMO.

As in last week's game QB J T Daniels lead the way but his numbers were subdued by short fields from DLS turnovers (28 points of the 52 were off of turnovers). He really impressed me in this game with his feet. He ran extremely well (quicker than Darnold) and darts past and outruns tacklers. One play had him a sure sack victim of 10 yards. He eluded it at the last second and turned it into a 40 yard TD. Last week I thought he threw passes short but in this game , though some may have been curtailed by the wind, it appeared that some is on purpose with the receivers stopping and ready to reach for the ball thrown at their back shoulder with their body shielding the defender off the ball. It was done 3 times in the game. On shorter throws he had prefect spirals and the wind had little to no effect.

Amon-Ra St Brown who was his major receiver, at one point (near end of Q3) had 115 yards of the total 182 passing yards and 1 of 2 TDs. He runs great patterns and has great hands, with one drop on a tough catch. He supposedly has narrowed his choices to USC and Notre Dame, but you already know the rumors.

Coach Rollinson, in his 29th year, pulled his entire starting team unit by unit in the last 4 minutes of the games. He is a very fine coach.
