**Boyd's 1971 team is regarded as possibly SCs best and was 24–2, No. 5 in the nation (both losses to No. 1 ucla - no NCAA tournament that season, only conference champions). His wins over UCLA in 1969 and 1970 were UCLA's first losses in Pauley Pavilion, built in 1966. Twice Conference Coach of the Year. He sent 10 players into the NBA, including Paul Westphal, Mo Layton, Gus Williams, Ron Riley and Cliff Robinson.

He was a USN Lt. Commander in WWII. Also coached baseball at Idaho in 1937-41 (34-90 record). Sent John Rudometkin and John Block to the NBA. After retiring as USC head coach in 1966, he served as an assistant AD until 1972, until his death of cancer.
