As to the retention of Clay Helton.
First, there is no “perfect fit” out there to replace Helton at USC. Coaches in consideration either come with “baggage” or huge contracts that need to be bought out, plus paying off Helton’s remaining contract.
Second, a major part of USC’s weakness in competition is due to the university’s failure to invest the funds in it’s team, i.e., coaches salaries, department substructure, recruiting aides, facilities and a perception that USC will spend the money to win.
Third, appreciation of a decent coach who will avoid the pitfalls other coaches, even the beatified Pete Carroll, whose actions have resulted in sanctions that handicapped the team from succeeding for multiple years.
Fourth, support for the new university President and Athletic Director. Let’s give them a chance to put their plan in place and hopefully improve the reputation of USC. We have spent too many years in the “quick fix” mode.....remember Steve Sarkisian?
Finally, people forget that John McKay had two terrible years at his start and the alumni were screaming for his head. Norm Topping gave McKay one more year and supported the Athletic Department. Look what happened. I’d rather have a university with some set of morals than a SEC cesspool.
