Training camp cannot come soon enough for Tre Madden. The oft-injured running back says he’s been cleared and will be a full participant from Day 1.
We caught up with the 6-1, 225-pound redshirt senior this week and got some insight on his health, summer workload and expectations for the season.
How are you doing?
TM: “I’m feeling healthy, I’m 100 percent.”
Have the coaches told you to take it easy during the offseason?
TM: “No. (Johnny) Nansen told me he wanted me to have the best offseason I could possibly have and I feel like I’m doing that. I feel like I’m 100 percent and ready to go.”
I ask because you’re only taking a few reps a day during the team portion of player-run practices.
TM: “Right. I’m just focused on the teaching aspect with our younger guys, getting Cedric (Ware) and Dominic (Davis) and Ronald (Jones II) acclimated, so that when we get into fall camp they can get serviceable reps."
I see. I guess that’s why we haven’t seen Justin Davis take too many reps either.
TM: “We’re old heads, we’ve been doing this for a long time. We’ve got the right to put them in there and get them reps.”
Psychologically, what does it mean for you to not have to worry about your toe?
TM: “Just think about football, that’s all I have to think about. I’m just ready to get back on the field. I’m itching to get out here.”
I believe you’re a big X factor for this offense. What kind of role do you envision for yourself?
TM: “I hear Lightning and Thunder, me and JD out there, feeding off each other. He’ll get in and I’ll get in, just feed off each other and bring our styles and contribute to the offense. That’s what I see."
And you’re Thunder?
TM: “Rightfully so, I guess.”
What is your mindset going into presumably your final year?
TM: “I feel like I still have a lot to prove at this institution. I just want to make a big imprint here and have my name remembered and do something great. Just show what I can do for the whole season.”
Do you have any personal goals or benchmarks you’d like to reach?
TM: “I got them but I just keep them to myself and just see what happens.”
During camp, what will be critical for you to do in order to gauge your health?
TM: “Getting in the training room every day after practice and taking care of myself. When I’m on the field I’m not thinking about an injury or anything, I’m just thinking about practice and executing the plays to the best of my ability.”
