I just spoke to a source close to Cary Angeline’s family about his decision to leave USC.

This source said Angeline was heavily invested into going to USC and that he wanted everything to work out there. But he made a decision to transfer that was based on the best path for his football career. Angeline expected that, after Daniel Imatorbhebhe’s injury issues, he would compete for more playing time. But it apparently didn’t happen as quickly as he had hoped.

The process of Angeline leaving USC started after the Texas game. Angeline didn’t receive one snap in the that game (after playing 16 snaps on offense in convincing victory over Stanford). He had already left the program prior to USC’s game against Cal.

According to this source, Angeline is planning to enroll in junior college, achieve his AA degree by June and then enroll at another school. His goal is to play college football next fall.

As of this weekend, Angeline had not yet been contacted by any colleges. But as a high school prospect, he had scholarship offers from schools all over the country and was considered one of USC’s most highly regarded recruits in the 2016 class. He chose the Trojans over Alabama, Ohio State, PSU, ND, FSU, and many, many others. He was also offered scholarships to play division one basketball. In fact, there were even some at USC who had approached him about being a two sport athlete for the Trojans.

Without Angeline on the roster, USC now has four scholarship tight ends.
