The University of Washington (UW) was founded in 1861 as the Territory University of Washington. John Pike (for whom Pike Street is named) was the university’s architect & builder. A Board of Regents was established in 1862, but the school struggled initially due to low enrollment / shortage of funds and closed 3 times (1863, ’67, ’76). Clara Antoinette McCarty Will was UW’s first graduate in 1876. In 1942, all persons of Japanese ancestry in the Seattle area were forced into inland internment camps as part of Executive Order 9066 following the attack on Pearl Harbor. During this difficult time, university president Lee Paul Sieg took an active and sympathetic leadership role in advocating for and facilitating the transfer of Japanese American students to universities and colleges away from the Pacific Coast to help them avoid the mass incarceration

Pregame

Will Conroy draws the assignment to speak to the donors for the last home game. He wants nothing more than to beat his alma mater and keep slim B1G tourney hopes alive

He notes Senior Night ceremonies are occurring tonight after the game, but that T-Will, Agee & Saint have chosen not to participate, believing that they can return next season. For T-Will it’s an obvious medical RS, for Agee it’s petitioning for an extra year due to his season at a JC. Saint’s case is apparently a medical RS for a year at Loyola, where he ended his season with depression issues.

Coach would love Saint to return. He’s the best defender and facilitator on the team. Can guard other team’s best player and will do whatever it takes to win

A founder wants a message relayed to the team. In his 25 yrs of watching SC bball, this team plays the hardest and has the most grit of any SC team. The results have not been optimal, but he says they never quit and deserve to hear their effort is appreciated. Conroy says that means a lot

For a rainy night in LA, 5,856 are in the house including the ever-present Crash who is honored late in the game for his enthusiastic support of SC Athletics. Players’ families present including the Hornery’s from Toowoomba, AUS and a large group of friends, let’s hope he gets into the game.

SC enters the game on a 5-game losing streak needing a win to stay alive. UW has lost 4 straight

The Game

Starting lineup - Des, Yates, Agbo, Saint, Agee

Josh Cohen stayed in sweats on the bench the whole game, allowing Agee to have another big game after 29 pts,14 reb, 6 blk vs Oregon. He tallied 18 pts (6-8 FG, 4-5 3FG, 2-2 FT), 5 rebs, 2 stls vs UW

SC controls the tip, but Yates missed layup and Kepnang’s dunk puts UW up 2-0 at 19:30. UW maintains a 2 pt lead until Agee hits a 3FG at 16:07 to give SC the 8-7 lead. Davis answers back with a 3FG and after an Osobor dunk UW has a12-11 lead at 14:28. This would be UW’s last lead, as SC shot lights out in this one. UW’s largest lead was 3 pts, SCs was 18 pts at 1:21 after 2 FTs by Yates. The halftime score was 47-35.

For the half:

UW shot
46.3% FG (13-28), 45.5% 3FG (5-11), 50% FT (4-8)

SC shot 58.1% FG (18-31), 69.2% 3FG (9-13), 100% FT (2-2)

Second Half

UW strikes first in the 2nd half on a Kepnang dunk at 19:49, cutting the lead to 10 pts. They would get within 8 pts (54-46) at 15:39, but SC would continue it’s hot shooting and pulled away from UW, taking a 31 pt lead 87-56 at 4:33 on an Agbo 3 pt play. For the record fan favorite Hornery entered the game at 1:59 and promptly knocked down a 3FG.

For the game:

UW shot
43.1% FG (22-51), 39.1% 3FG (9-23), 57.1% FT (8-14)

SC shot 56.4% FG (31-55), 57.8% 3FG (15-26), 93.8% FT (15-16)

Final score 92-61, the 31 pt win matching SCs largest victory margin this season vs. Southern (82-51)

SC was led by Agbo’s 26 pts, including 7-10 3FG, Des’ 25 pt bounceback from the 1 pt effort last game. Agee’s 18 pts (4-5 3FG).

SC took care of the ball 10 TOs, season high 24 assists on 31 made FGs. The 15 made 3FGs is the most since SC made 19 3FGs in 2019 vs UW.

SC forced 16 UW TOs, which they turned into 21 pts. They had an edge in rebs (+6) & pts in the paint (28-22), despite being a smaller frontcourt going against at times 3 bigs Osobor, Kepnang, & Wilhelm Breidenbach – Mater Dei teammate of Hornery. Hornery was 1st team All-State, Trinity League MVP & OC Player of the Year

SC improves to 15-15 (7-12), UW falls to 13-17 (4-15)
