Say you could choose between having Alabama’s S&C coach or the best OL coach in the country... (don’t know who that is maybe OU or Clemson’s coach).
Which one would be more beneficial to the team?
A great S&C coach would have an effect on not just OL run and pass blocking but really the whole team to include defensive players (tackling, block shedding).
Then again, strength and flexibility can be negated on an OL (and DL) by lack of technique/leverage and discipline. A great OL coach and a fundamentally sound OL would do wonders for the kind of skill position talent that SC gets. Aggression is also separate from strength and can be taught.
My personal viewpoint on CFB is that grown men rule the day and many times it’s possible to be dominant without elite talent simply by having stronger players. It’s not a panacea for everything, but most of the time it works, especially when you have talent.
If the talent at USC were ever as big/strong as Stanford and Alabama from a power and functional strength standpoint, they would be elite, even without a talented roster.
My vote is for an elite S&C coach over an elite OL coach if I had to choose. I think this is even more important for USC recruiting in SoCal where the OL/DL recruits aren’t naturally as big and strong out of HS as SEC recruits.
