today ( exposed knees, covered knees, large thigh pads, small thigh pads, shoulder pads that expose entirety of the arm to pads like that that appear to cover little of the shoulders,no knee pads- you get the idea) I also see what I ( old school) would refer to the old " girdles" that protected the pelvis, tailbone and hips and were worn under the pants. The modern ones appear to offer many variations of that probably due to any combination of position , need for speed, protection, etc. I noticed how Darnold wears a unit that extends around the thigh and offers protection for the upper leg- I've noticed a number of running backs with those:contrast that with Browne who has the more minimal thigh pad protection. I guess simply put- Sam expects to run on plays( Browne not so much) This is just an observation but it would appear Sam is expected to be more two dimensional.
