Notes from Thursday's closed practice...

Team was in shells and shorts.

Defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox will now coach from the coaches' box.

"We just felt like for his eyes and how we operate defensively, obviously I'll be a little bit more involved defensively, I can help more on the field with the players," Steve Sarkisian said. "Justin's such a bright guy, he's been in the box before, this isn't new to him, not at Washington but previous places, Tennessee and Boise (State), so this isn't new to him.

"I think there's a real sense of confidence with the guys we have on the field to make the proper adjustments, Year 2 in the system, I think it'll allow him to have really good eyes in the box and have a good sense of comfort in calling the game."

Tee Martin will also coach from the box while the remaining assistants coach from the field. I learned that last year only Clay Helton and graduate assistants were in the box.

Sark said the defensive coaches will be responsible for the substitutions of their respective units.

Sark said two anticipated byproducts of calling less plays on offense is he'll be able to assist on special teams coaching and give more attention to how opposing offenses are attacking USC's defense.

Walk-ons George Katrib, Alex Wood and Christian Tober were awarded scholarships.

Sark praised Katrib's contribtion on special teams, Tober's performance in spring and fall, and Wood's competitiveness since assuming kickoff duties in the middle of last season.

Ykili Ross (shoulder) and Jordan Austin (ankle sprain) are out for Saturday.

Per usual, USC has a closed walk-through Friday with no media availability.
