The attempted field goal late in the game was a really foolish call because even if you make the field goal, one first down or one defensive penalty and the game is over. Why? Because we only had one time out left. Plus, effective drives were fairly hard to come by in this game. And even if you hit the field goal and stop uw, chances of winning are low. Why? Because uw will punt the ball downfield on 4th down and usc will probably have to drive a long way to to kick a realistic field goal. If you don't think you can make a 4th and 6, what makes you think that you can drive most of the field in a short period of time and then hit a 2nd field goal. You will need to pass the ball a lot on that second drive and kessler and our wr's have been off all night.

Bottom line is that you are driving on uw. You have the momentum. You only need 6 yards. If you don't get the 1st down, you still have a chance to get the ball back if you stop uw. Not sure why sark thought he could somehow score twice inside of inside of 4 minutes and hold uw to no first downs. We had not scored much all night. So why not try to score when you have probably your one and only chance? Throw a sort pass for a 1st down and then run the ball down their throats for the win. Time is running out. You may not see the ball again. And even though our defense played pretty well tonight, you know they have a history of folding late in the 4th. And when uw got the ball, that is exactly what the usc defense did.

Finally, it is about philosophy. You want to instill confidence in your team and show them that you think they can make the first down. At the end of the game you must show confidence and let your players play.
