Many people say that we really don't have that much talent. My point is that when you have 21 dl and lb's(not including true freshman) that are all rated 4 star or better you ought to be able to find at least 6 to 10 great ones. Granted, every player does not work out. If you happen to be really really lucky maybe 15 of the 21 turn out be as predicted. Average luck might be 10 or 11. And with bad luck maybe only 6 or 7 turn out to be great players. But if only 6 work out well, you still probably have bunch hard working average talent type players to choose from. It seems hard to believe that sua is our only good player out of those 21 dl and lb's. And it also seems hard to believe that out all the db's we have, only adoree is playing at a 4 or 5 star level. And by the way, even sua and adoree make plenty of mistakes.
I could go through the offense too, but it is the same story. As an example, I think 3 starters on our oline were offered by bama and a lot of other top programs. I remember doing an analysis of this during the carroll years. There was a year where some highly touted guys like whitney lewis were not working out. So I went back and looked to see how these top rated players fared in the long run. Or at least how they played in college. And think it was a little over over 50 percent that panned out. Maybe 55.percent. But we also had some players rated a little lower that turned out to be great too. The guys who did not work out too well were backups along with some of the younger players. Most of the starters were guys who were living up to their billing. I just am using using the law of averages with this. So why did most of pc's starters live up to their billing and many of our players do not? Coaching. PC has the same players as all the rest of the teams in the nfl. Why does he do so well. Coaching. Why did Kyle Whittinham go undefeated in the past and why is he undefeated this year? Coaching. Same for Gary Patterson.
My final point is that even if some of the starters are average in talent, you can certainly coach them up. Other teams do. But that is not the real problem. We have the talent. We need better coaching.
