The Lott Impact Trophy goes to the student-athlete who best exhibits the characteristics of Ronnie Lott by making an IMPACT on and off the field. The acronym IMPACT stands for Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity. The Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation has donated over $950,000 to charities including over $400,000 for college scholarships since its formation in 2004. The IMPACT Player of the Week is selected each week of the college football season from the players on the Lott IMPACT Trophy Watch List. A $1,000 scholarship was awarded to the winner's university general scholarship fund. This trophy has been handed out 19 times by our Trojan great...and NOT ONE TROJAN has ever won it. Two bruins have won it! A domer and a Cal bear have been honored, 5 from the SEC, 7 from the Big Ten, plus a player from BC and TCU, but no one from SC?!
This year we had Tuli up for the award and I was feeling that we may finally break thru, but there was stiff competition:
I can't really argue (too much!) with the selection of Will Anderson, the Bama LB as last night's winner, but come on....if not Tuli, then when will we ever have a winner? So I wonder how they select the winner and found it is thru the Pacific Club Foundation. Well, then I wonder who is on the Foundation and find the board of advisors includes: Peter Arbogast, Steve Atwater, Harris Barton, John Brodie, Brad Budde, Dick Butkus, Mark Carrier, Chuck Cecil, Jack Del Rio, Chris Doleman, Vince Ferragamo, Mike Giddings, Kevin Greene, Rosey Grier, John Hall, Phil Hansen, John Holecek, Ed Hookstratten, Tom Holmoe, Jim Jeffcoat, Brent Jones, Henry Jones, Chuck Knox, Willie Lanier, Jim Leonhard, Howie Long, Pat McInally, Mark May, Matt Millen, Joe Montana, Tory Nixon, Ken Norton, Jr., Mel Owens, Rodney Peete, Clancy Pendergast, Gary Plummer, John Seymour, Lynn Swann, Keena Turner.
So on that list are the Voice of the Trojans, 5 Trojan players, a couple of former SC assistant coaches, local sports writers. Have we never in the last 19 years had a defensive player that measured up as a worthy recipient of the Lott Impact Award? That would coincide with the start of the Pete Carroll era. I think there have been plenty to consider: Shaun Cody, Adoree Jackson, Taylor Mays, Su'a Cravens, Lofa Tatupu, Matt Grootegood, BKU, Rey Maualuga, Sedric Ellis, Leonard Williams, Mike Patterson, Clay Matthews III, Brian Cushing or Talanoa Hufanga. Were none of these guys worthy? If not Tuli, then who will be the next Trojan worthy of the Lott Trophy? Do you see anyone on the team now or coming up? I don't. This award seems unobtainium for SC defenders!
