Football Sources give the latest details on Bolden

On Thursday, Clay Helton announced starting safety Bubba Bolden would be suspended indefinitely.

TrojanSports.com has uncovered the reasons for the suspension.

According to multiple sources, the issue originates from a conflict between Bolden and members of a USC women's athletic team in their place of residence. Bolden was asked to leave and refused. He was reported for refusing and given a severe warning by his coaches.

That was earlier this year but the dispute continued. These sources say there was a conflict on this particular women's athletics team over whether or not Bolden was treated fairly in the initial dispute. The conflict on that team erupted and it led to Bolden making potentially inappropriate remarks. At least one party argues Bolden's remarks are threatening and he was reported again. His case is now being reviewed by USC's Title IX office while he's suspended.

One source we spoke to said he expects the Title IX office to take its time reviewing the matter.

We reached out to USC's Sports Information Department twice did not receive comment. We will update this story with further details or their complete denial if they get back to us.

Morning games thread....

Texas at Maryland. Is 2017 history repeating itself? Watching this one now

Oregon State at tOSU... ugly showing for the P12.

FAU at Okie... I guess what Lane said on the Dan Patrick show last week was true. Don’t belong on the same field. It’s on YouTube and worth a listen, funny, especially his Saban impersonation.

Udub at Auburn... marquee game at 12:30

Last night Furd sputters but pulls away from SDSU. They look very beatable if we can get pressure on Costello

Unlike Coach Helton Nick Saban refuses...

To name a starter for this Saturday's Louisville game... He is catching a lot of flack and reporters think he may wait until the day of the game to announce who will start for the Crimson Tide..... I was not aware of it but apparently Tua who brought Alabama back from defeat in the national championship game had informed Saban that if he didn't get to play in that game he was going to transfer to SC.

Blow out wins under Clay Helton - FWIW

The UNLV thread got me thinking. Clay Helton - has he had any blow out wins? Let's assume 28 points is a blow out.

Before we talk about Clay - let's go back to 2015 under Sark. In Sark's shortened 2015 season as head coach Sark had 3 blow out wins in 2015 before Clay Helton took over:
  1. Arkansas State 55-6
  2. Idaho 59-9
  3. Arizona State 42-14 (right at 28 points)
Under Clay Helton USC blow out wins:
  1. Utah State 45-7, Sep 2016, right after Alabama kicked our asses
  2. Arizona 48-14, Oct 2016
  3. Oregon State 38-10, Oct 2017, (right at 28 points but did not feel like a blow out). note: Fink did not replace Darnold until mid 4th Quarter - Fink scores on a 55 yard QB keeper to make it 28 points.

You have to hand it to Chris Petersen at UW...

For Washington to play Auburn at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta the Washington coach insisted that the roof be closed. He said that Auburn is used to practicing in the humidity while the weather in Seattle is totally different and felt it would be an unfair advantage for the Tigers. Good for him!.. I doubt that would happen if SC was faced with that situation...

Football Quick Hits - UNLV Thursday

The news of the day Thursday was coach Clay Helton's announcement that projected starting safety Bubba Bolden is now out indefinitely for undisclosed reasons. (Read the details in our separate post on that matter.)

As for the rest of Helton's post-practice update Thursday, he touched on a couple key injury concerns, elaborated on the Trojans' rotation plans throughout the defense, talked about how he plans to use the running backs and, of course, offered some final thoughts on freshman quarterback JT Daniels' upcoming debut Saturday against UNLV.

Injury report (with Helton's comments)

-Left tackle Austin Jackson, who had been dealing with an ankle injury: "He looked very good today, anticipate him playing in the game."

-Outside linebacker Porter Gustin, who by all accounts is expected to play after missing most of the preseason with a torn meniscus: "Looked very good again today. We'll evaluate it tomorrow, but he looked very good."

-Center Toa Lobendahn, who is dealing with a pec strain: "Did not practice. Still questionable for the game. Not looking as good as the other two."

-Tight end Josh Falo (hamstring): "Did not practice today and not looking as good as the other two."

Lobendahn is obviously the key concern here, as USC could be pairing a true freshman QB with an inexperienced center in redshirt freshman Brett Neilon (with freshman Justin Dedich behind him).

Helton previously expressed his confidence in Neilon while noting that he probably could have contributed last year if the decision hadn't already been made to redshirt him. It sounds like he'll get a chance to prove himself early in this campaign.

Overall, though, Helton said he feels good about the general health of his offensive line.

"We had some bad luck last year and were young behind it. This year, you look at where we're going in right now, Chuma [Edoga] looks really good [at right tackle], Andrew [Vorhees] looks really good [at right guard], we'll see where Toa is at, Chris [Brown] looks really good [at left guard] and Austin [Jackson] looks great. And their backups are all there. So besides having Toa being questionable and not looking great like he's going to be there for us, we still have a two-deep that can get it done. So I'm glad about that."

Defensive rotations

Expect to see a lot of rotation throughout the defensive line, where the Trojans feel exceptionally confident about their depth.

"I think, one, we have a great opportunity to roll the interior guys very well with Malik [Dorton] and Jay [Tufele], as well as Brandon Pili and Marlon [Tuipulotu]," Helton said. "And then on the outside we feel very confident with the way Hunter [Echols] is coming on to be able to spell Porter, as well as we feel good with Kana'i [Mauga].

"So that's going to kind of be a waterfall to be able to exchange four men, and Clancy's done a wonderful job of making a pass-rush team also that can go in that's fresh bodies that can come in there and provide pass rush on third downs as well as two-minute situations. So you're going to see a lot of guys on the defensive front."

Helton also expects John Houston Jr. and Levi Jones to rotate at the Will linebacker, and for cornerbacks Greg Johnson (starter) and Isaiah Langley to pretty much split reps on that side of the field.

More thoughts on Daniels and the game plan

Helton said he feels offensive coordinator Tee Martin has put together a game plan that is "simple, but not easy."

"[We have] the ability to get guys open, but it's concepts that we have been running all spring, all fall that I think the kids are comfortable with," Helton said. "So I'm hoping to see a very clean offense with not a lot of missed assignments. I think Tee's done a wonderful job putting a good gameplay together, and I look forward to seeing it."

The Trojans test drove that game plan in their mock game last Saturday, which was closed to media, and each quarterback offered feedback on what they felt most comfortable running.

For his part, Helton seems plenty comfortable with running a true freshman QB out there Saturday in the mega-talented Daniels.

"I'm excited for him. He's put a lot of work and a lot of investment into having this opportunity, both in the offseason as well as this week," Helton said. "I'm looking forward to seeing exactly where we're at as an entire offense, where's our offensive line and running backs and establishing the run, the wide receivers -- especially the newcomers coming on board -- where are they at the first time they get in that stadium? And then just how JT handles everything. He's handled everything with such maturity and poise, I expect nothing less for him when he's there on Saturday."

Running back rotation

Sophomore tailback Stephen Carr has looked terrific all preseason, despite being listed as the third co-starter on the official depth chart released last Sunday.

Helton acknowledged he's still curious to see how Carr responds after missing the spring recovering from back surgery.

Carr rushed for 363 yards and three touchdowns on 5.6 yards per carry last season, Malepeai had 261 yards on 5.3 YPC and Ware had 247 yards and one TD on 5.0 YPC as those three all got work behind lead back Ronald Jones.

"I's probably just a feel for the game. I think the one thing that's probably just a gray area, it's really Stephen's first game back off of back surgery. We've had contact, he looks good, but I really want to try to get a feel for it once we get in that game," Helton said. "You know, the beautiful thing is you have Ced and you have [Malepeai], who have had unbelievable camps. But I'm looking not only for this game but for the extended period of time when you're talking about hopefully 15 games that that three-headed monster can roll in there, keep those backs fresh and keep them healthy. So we will play all three backs in the game."

Info on the PAC-12 South & Forecasts

Unlike the PAC-12 North the PAC12 South is less predictable IMO. In the South 5 teams got first place votes (all but ASU) in the PAC12 media beauty contest.

1 USC: The team wasdiscussed in the prior post. This year: Ret Starters: O-7, D-6, K&P. Projected: #2PS/ #22 Nat.. New QB and returning HC: True Freshman J. T. Daniels is starting QB. I think JT is special and UNLV is a good break-in game. I also think that the quality of backup if he isn't ready (say he becomes "Stormed" Daniels) or gets hurt, is better than normal.

2. Arizona: Last Year 7-6 all/ 5-4P12. Key Losses: Off- Backup QB B Dawkins (1191 combined yards), RB N Wilson (521 yds), OL J Alsedek, Def- CB B Cruickshank (R5- 75Tkl, 3 int), LB R Rutt, DL L Bruno Starter Losses: Offense RB, RG, LG. LT. Defense: DT, Spur.
This year: Ret Starters: O-7, D-9, NO K&P. Projected: #3P12S/ #38 Nat. Returning QB Tate. New HC Kevin Sumlin. whose TAMU record left some question marks. He started off well , however he went 19-21 the next 5 conference years. He thas an Arizona team that was pretty good and returns most everyone. Tate is the bright spot with 1591 pass yds and 1411 running yards, and he is now a Jr. RB Taylor adds 847 yards in the run game. The potent Offense averaged 41.3 ppg and scored 35 vs. USC (Tate got a combined 307 yds). Will Sumlin improve it? His TAMU teams sputtered at times. The Defense gave up 34.4 ppg (USC scored 49) and are especially leaky against the Pass attack. The UA schedule has 5 home games vs. PAC12 teams, spread out for them to make a positive mark. They play 2 easier teams before the USC game. I am not sure that is good or bad.

3 Utah: Last Year 7-6 all/ 3-6P12. Key Losses: Off- Backup QB T Williams (812 Yards)WRs D Carrington (980 yards) and R Singleton (521 yards),OL.S Uhatafe. Def- DL K Fitts, (R6), LB K Lufatasaga (82 tkls), LB S Tauteoli (64 Tkls)..Starter Losses: Offense: WR, TE, LG,. Defense: DL (3), LB, CB.
This year: Ret Starters: O-8, D-6, St-2. Projected: #2P12S/ #22 Nat. Returns H Coach and QB, many are placing this team at second place, some for first (14 P12 media votes) . I see that 3-6 in conference record and one stretch of 1-6 record in the PAC, mostly close games. Their O loses only 3 starters (incl. top 2 rec. Carrington and Singleton). QB Huntley (injured part of last season) is a middle of the pack guy who threw 15 td vs. 10 int., but has no experienced backup The running game looks talented and deep. The D loses 5 starters (including 2 top tacklers) but are still full of vowels and pounds. They play 5 away games in the PAC12, including UW, at Stanford, at Oregon and USC at home, which may be the 4 best of the P12 best. A pretty good D (23.2 ppg) and an average O (29.5 ppg). They might improve a bit, but how much? Utah plays tough teams Stanford (A) and Arizona (H) before the USC game.

4. Arizona State: Last Year 7-6 all/ 6-3 P12S. Key Losses: Off- RB K Ballange 689 Rush yds (R4), RB D Richard 1027 rush yds. OL S Jones (R6), OL J McCollum. Def- LB C Sam 127 Tkl (R6), LB DJ Calhoun 99 Tkl, DB S Adams 69 Tkl, 2 Int. Starter Losses: Offense:-RB (2), LG, LT, : NT, DE (2), LB (2), DB (3).

This year ret. Starters: O-8, D-4, P&K. Projected: #5 or 6 PS/ #51 Nat #57. Ret. QB but New Coach. They Lost a lot on D (which gave up 32.8ppg) and the hiring of HC Herm Edwards is controversial. But he is a former pro coach that does know football. They lost their top 2 runners. but have a decent QB (run and pass) in Wilkins and a very good receiver set. On D its a different story, loss of top 4 tacklers. I think the Off. is OK (31.8 ppg) with QB Wilkins and top rec. N'Keal Harry et al. The OL is a question. But the bottom 3 teams in the PAC12S all have question marks and ASU has some reasonable retuning talent and might surprise a few teams here. They play at USC after 2 soft games.

5. UCLA: Last Year 6-7 all/ 4-5 P12. Key Losses: Off- QB J Rosen 3756 yds (R1), WR J Lasley 1264 yds (R5), WR D Andrews (773 Yards), OL S Quessenberry (R5), OL K Miller (R1), OL N Terian.. Def- LB K Young 110 Tkl (R4), DB J Wadood 79 Tkl, DL-J Touioti-Mariner. Starter Losses Offense: QB, WR(2), OC, LG, RT. Defense: DE(2), OLB, S., NG, WLB, P.

This year: Ret Starters: O-5, D-7, K&P. Projected: #4PS/ #51 Nat. UCLA lost a bunch of players, many drafted by the pros. Chip Kelly was a good college coach, not so great pro coach. He faces an uphill battle this year. The team last year averaged 32.1 ppg but gave up 36.6 ppg, and therein lies a problem. There will likely be a change of offense AND defense, and that takes time. The defense was as Run leaky as Arizona was against the passing game. Change to a 3 man DL vs. a 4 man, Will the O go from a pro style with Rosen, to a Kelly style option team? Some overall talent, but pretty raw. Phil Steele has them at #6 in the PAC-12 south. I'll give them a break at #5. They play USC after taking on Utah (H), Oregon (A) and ASU (A). This is followed by Stanford . Yikes!

6. Colorado: Last Year 5-7 all/ 2-7P12. Key Losses: Off- RP P Lindsay 1474 yards, WRs B Bobo, S Fields and D Ross (a combined total rec yds of over 1800 yards), LT J Irwin Def- Db I Oliver (R2) 13 pass breakups, DB R Mueller 58 Tkls,..Starter LossesOff- RB, WR (3), TE, OC, LG, RT. Def-DE, LB (2), CB, FS..
This year: Ret Starters: O-4, D-6, K&P. Projected: #5 PS/ #62 Nat.,Returning QB and HC. Colorado's Coach Macintyre now in his 6th year is a candidate for firing. He is just 2 seasons from an excellent 10-4/ 8-2 but that is beginning to seem like an illusion. The team O went down nearly 5 ppg and the defense gave up nearly 7 more points per game and over 200 yards per game on the ground. The O looks stripped in the run and pass areas, and OL. They have 5 home games but the rebuilding will be dominant here. The Buffs play UCLA and ASU before going to USC and UW. They may have a decent record coming into game.

Ok, done with this … heading to my man cave for hibernation. Wake me for the UNLV gam

USC offered Barlow just days before the start of the season. He's a TCU commit from Texas so the Trojans will have some work to do.

USC offered a scholarship to Bernard in the summer of 2017 after an impressive showing at a USC camp. He visited the campus a few times since that offer and got in contact with Tim Drevno after he joined the USC staff. But it doesn’t seem like there was a huge push for Bernard. He committed to Utah in the middle of August.

USC offered a scholarship to Bivens in October of 2017 and remained involved for him for quite sometime. Bivens even placed USC on his top 6 back in March of this year. But he stopped considering USC and doesn’t have plans to visit anymore.

Charbonnet is arguably the best tailback in Southern California and was a longtime USC target before he committed to Michigan. It would be a shock to those around him if he flipped his commitment after making it in June.

USC extended a scholarship to Christon in February and the tailback has been a regular on USC’s campus ever since. He’s certainly someone for USC fans to watch. Everyone I’ve talked to expects him to eventually commit to USC.

Cook flirted with the idea of going to USC after receiving a scholarship offer earlier this year. He visited USC in March and placed the Trojans in his top 10 in June. But he’s now committed to Missouri and it would be a huge surprise if he flipped to USC.

USC extended a scholarship offer to Crouch but he has shown no interest and is likely to attend school much closer to his home state of North Carolina.

Davis received a scholarship from Washington in the summer of 2017 and committed to the Huskies in January. USC came through with a scholarship offer at the end of May. So while Davis has always liked USC, the coaching staff is certainly playing catch up to Washington. Davis did visit USC over the summer and this seems like a two team race between the Huskies and the Trojans. Davis has told TrojanSports.com that he would be interested in UCLA if the Bruins got involved as well.

Davis was considering a visit USC short after he received a scholarship offer but it doesn’t seem like that’s the plan anymore. USC offered him a scholarship after he had decided on Wisconsin and it would be a surprised if he flipped anyway.

Davis has always maintained that he wants to visit USC. The only issue is he’s a solid LSU commit in LSU’s backyard. It would shock everyone if he flipped to USC.

Dollars was offered a scholarship by USC in January and had always talked up the Trojans as one of his favorite options. But in May, he chose Oregon over USC and committed to the Ducks. He did perform at a USC camp over the summer but it would be a surprise if he changed his commitment.

Mellusi earned a scholarship offer from USC back in may of 2017 but the two parties didn’t get much beyond that point. Mellusi never showed much interest in USC and is now committed to Clemson.

USC offered Major a scholarship in February and actually made his top 7 just a few months later. But he’s from Oklahoma and held a scholarship offer from the Sooners when that list was released. To no one’s surprise, Major eventually committed to Oklahoma.

What is the value of the UNLV game? (post Cotton Bowl)

It's a good opening game for the team to get real reps in a live situation, blah, blah, blah. Of course we all want to see how JT Daniels plays, etc.

But here's why I think the UNLV game is immensely valuable. Post Cotton Bowl.

The UNLV defensive front 7 is really substandard. At the same time UNLV has a new Defensive Coordinator who will try lots of different looks, stunts, blitz, etc.

Post Cotton Bowl, this Offensive Line & Coach have no more excuses. The UNLV game may be a contrary leading indicator for rest of season.
  1. If our O-Line looks average against UNLV? We will be facing a very long season. My 10-2 expectation will look dicey. I don't expect major improvements during the course of the season. They are who they are.
  2. If our O-Line consistently dominates the front 7 of UNLV then we must wait until Stanford game for another assessment. Our O-Line dominating UNLV is only a "Meet Expectations" performance.
  3. In particular I will be watching pass protection. How good/bad is our O-Line pass protection.
While I will be ecstatic to watch JT Daniels and the WR corps doing their thing. I will be focusing on this 1 metric - how does our O-line look. And, in particular, the pass protection.

I'm confident our D, our QB, our WR, our RB's are solid. These units will take us to victory on Saturday regardless of our O-Line.
