Can we discuss Donte Williams and his role in this defense

I would really like to know if the players that Donte recruits and is responsible for coaching up are any good. A lot of these guys are 4-5 star guys and most of the top colleges around the country had recruited most of them yet they have all been disappointing. Is it the system they are playing in, are they not coached up by Donte, are they all overrated? I would love to hear back from Ryan or anyone that is around the team. These guys looked lost, they get beat deep, they get beat all night playing soft, they look lost much of the time, they don't tackle well. Really to be honest they were a mess! So how much responsibility does Donte bare in all of this?

GTS Results - Week 11 - Oregon

Another week, another bummer of a loss. For possibly the first time all year, the GTS pool actually picked over the score for the most part. In big part that was due to some clock grinding as the game really was basically over when Ore took the 2nd half kick and went down and scored to go up 3 scores. SC "held" Ore to only 36, but Ore scored or missed a FG on all but 1 drive. 1 punt forced, zero turnovers for SC on the game. Can't win many like that.

In GTS land, no one was too close this week, but @Bigtrojan78 pulls out the victory with a 13 just edging out @187Bruins who had a 14, and then a whole bunch more who were in the 16 to 19 range. Congrats on the win, @Bigtrojan78. We have one week left, so everyone make your final pick for a chance at glory and GTS immortality.

Season standings didn't change much. @Larr212121 continues to hold a good sized lead over me, with @trojan_a_1 sliding into 3rd, @cramwetzel dropping back to 4th and @187Bruins rounding out the top 5.

Good luck to everyone in the final week, and Fight On! Beat the Bruins!

MBB game thread: No. 16 USC vs. UC Irvine

USC opened the first week of the season with two wins, and the Trojans are back in action tonight against UC Irvine at Galen Center. Boogie Ellis is out with an ankle injury tonight joining Kobe Johnson (knee) and Bronny James on the unavailable list for Andy Enfield.

Isaiah Collier, Oziyah Sellers, DJ Rodman, Arrinten Page and Joshua Morgan get the start for USC tonight.

Crystal clear.....

That we just don't have the dogs to compete at an elite level at this point. Seeing Oregon WRs torch our secondary made this painfully clear. Regarding talent gap, I'm talking both sides of the ball, we are really an average Pac 12 team, when you really consider how we struggle against decent to great Pac 12 teams. Sure a lot of this was due to Grinch but our offense sucked as well. How many times did we see our OL fail to win the line of scrimmage? For me this season hurt much more than others given the huge expectations of making the CFP, and conference championship. Then watching us lose 4 out of our last 5 games was excruciating. Going forward we really need a total culture /mindset reset and recruit ALL POSITIONS not just WR and QBs. We need to stop the "..... we're so close narrative" because it is a lie. I think if CLR is too succeed at SC he will need to change and evolve to admit failure and finally realize that he can't win without a good defense. We need a tried and true elite DC not some risky prospect who only has unproven potential. Unfortunately the fact we are still talking about culture change and defensive struggles heading into year 3 of CLR is a huge concern. That's why it's so critical for him to get a top DC to at least shore that part of our game up. CLR will continue to recruit and develop top QB talent but it remains to be seen if he can have a dominant defense. There's no way they fire Riley anytime soon so we just need to hope and pray he can turn things around get our team headed on the right track through recruiting and player development.

Props to Nua and Odom

This likely won't be a popular opinion, but given their emergency appointments, what they had to contend as well as the injuries and lack of depth in battling CFB's best offense, our Co-DCs deserve credit IMO. Keep in mind, until last night, Nua/Odom had virtually no DC experience and were without the aid of their hyperfocused, offensive-minded HC.

Sure, our defense looked mighty shakey and at times quite inept, but bear in mind that not even Saban could've dislodged the Grinch-infused rot with just a couple of days of practice.

Peace, out!
