Football Wednesday Footnotes: A new injury to monitor, special prep for USC defense

The big news Wednesday was seeing linebacker Cam Smith walk off the field with his right hamstring wrapped in ice and change into casual clothes for the rest of practice.

Clay Helton addressed the injury and his confidence in USC's inside linebackers if Smith is limited Saturday vs. Colorado.

Some info on Colorado…

Colorado is 5-0 and USC is 3-2. Should be easy to pick UC. But that would likely be fool's gold. Colorado SOS is 94th toughest. USC SOS is 7th Toughest. The cumulative W-L for Colorado's opponents is 6-18. The W-L for USC opponents is 19-10. USC had been on the road for 3 of their 5 games. Colorado has been at home for 3 in Boulder, and in the far corner of Denver some 50 miles away for a 4th. The lone true road game was at Nebraska (0-5) where they won 33-28. Hmmm…..

Colorado returned 4 starters on offense and 6 on defense from 2017. They lost 3 starting OL and a good RB in Phillip Lindsay (1507 yards) . And they lost 4 of their top 6 WRs.. One of those O starters is a very good QB Seven Montez. who topped the Wildcats in passing, and was #2 in rushing last year. He is passing very well (284 ypg, 11 TDs-2 Int. at 75% competitions). They do have a good replacement runner in T McMillan (528 yards-6.3 ypc-4TDs). The receiving corps depends heavily on L Shenualt, Jr.leading at 51 receptions for 708 ypg with 6 TDs. There is a pretty big drop off after that (RD Nixon with 23 catches for 290 yards and 1 TD). On defense they brought back their top 3 tacklers and lost their next 4 top tacklers.

Colorado: They beat CSU (Now 2-4) at Denver 45-13. Won at Nebraska (now 0-5) by 33-28. They beat 1-aa New Hampshire (1-4) at home by 45-14. They beat UCLA (now 0-5) at home 38-16 . They beat Arizona State (now 3-3) at home 28-21. Overall they average 37 ppg and give up 18. But against 'better' competition (Nebraska? and ASU) they averaged 30 ppg and gave up 25 ppg.

The Colorado offense has averaged 197 ypg run and 293 ypg pass, Their numbers are skewed by their competition, so it’s a little tough to gauge. They are about the same as USC on 3rd down conversions (about average). On defense they gave up 201 yards pass and 154 yards run. (about average). .They are about the same on both sides of the ball in sacks as USC.. Turnover margin is slightly better than USC.

On special teams their punting is better, but elsewhere USC has the better return results and FG kicking (UC is 4-7 on 30 plus attempts) .

Forecast: SC beat UC 38-24 last year in Boulder ( Montez 27-49-376, 12-40 yds run). USC pretty much bottled up the run game. Expect something similar this year. They beat UC 21-17 at the Coliseum when UC won the PAC12 South. Overall USC is 12-0, and is 7-0 with both teams in the PAC12. USC is undefeated at the Coliseum under HC Helton. Colorado is stepping up Iin competition this year for the first time, and its in but their second away game.. My Forecast: USC 45 Colorado 24.

Football Tuesday Footnotes: A bye week of 'brutal self-evaluation'

Here's the news from Tuesday's practice:

LB Cam Smith, LB John Houston (stinger), QB JT Daniels and WR Amon-Ra St. Brown (shoulder) were full participants. (Each had been limited to some degree during the bye week.)

Daniels mostly abstained from throwing last week. Helton said he's on a pitch count because he's throwing more this year than he ever has before. He's continued to work on his deep balls. Helton lauded his back shoulder throws -- "he's about as good as I've seen with it" -- but isn't as sharp when trying to drop it in the bucket over the top of the defense.

Daniels tried one of these today to Trevon Sidney and sure enough, it was batted away by walk-on safety Jordan McMillan. Daniels also fumbled when nickel back Dominic Davis came free and knocked his arm down on a blindside blitz.

St. Brown looked very healthy and beat Chase Williams for a great jump-ball catch on a toss from Daniels. Matt Fink tried to go downfield to ASB but was picked off by Isaiah Langley.

LB Porter Gustin (ankle) and DL Malik Dorton (ankle) were limited.

DL Jay Tufele was in a car accident last week and is in the concussion protocol. He'll be monitored throughout the week to determine when he's available.

S Talanoa Hufanga is on the mend from a quad injury.

LB Levi Jones remained out because of illness.

LB Raymond Scott is out after having surgery on his finger. He's expected to return soon.

OTs Clayton Bradley (back) and Bernard Schirmer (neck) and QB Jack Sears did not practice.

Helton briefly addressed the Bubba Bolden leaving USC in his opening statement following practice:

"I wish him nothing but the best," Helton said. "Good player, good kid, and hopefully a very bright future for him. I know it will be."

Helton said he was not authorized to comment beyond that and did not answer when asked if he was blindsided by his indefinite suspension the week of the opener.

I've been told that's exactly what happened -- as far as Helton knew, Bolden was not facing any discipline for the incident Bolden alluded to in his Instagram post. Thus, Bolden was in line to start to begin the season. However, sources have told me there had been other transgressions involving the former USC safety. Perhaps his punishment was the culmination of repeated poor behavior.

Helton said he spent the bye week watching a lot of football, namely USC and Colorado. He was asked (by Ryan) for his main takeaway after self-scouting over the past week and he went into detail about what was learned.

Here's a summary:
  • Defensively, he lamented the lack of takeaways and stressed how important they are in creating separation in games.
  • Offensively, the team is typically starting fast but isn't consistent. He noted the need for a killer instinct.
  • Special teams, he's generally pleased but feels there are big lapses.
  • He told the coordinators to call more aggressive games and without fear -- "play to win."
  • He told he position coaches to be very critical of fundamentals and techniques.
  • He told the players there needs to be accountability for decision-making.
"Just a brutally honest self-evaluation of what I think we need to do as an entire team," he said.

Tee Martin weighed in as well:

"It was really good to be able to self-scout with a new quarterback and just seeing what we are, or at least what's on tape. Teams can't prepare for what they don't see. It was good to see some things that have been called that's on tape that teams are preparing for, and some things that we've practiced that haven't been called yet that's good stuff. I got some wrinkles and look forward to getting it called on Saturdays."

We have video interviews with Martin, Daniels, WR Tyler Vaughns and TE Josh Falo.

Football UPDATED: Bubba Bolden leaves USC amidst 28-month suspension

Safety Bubba Bolden is officially no longer enrolled at USC. The sophomore wrote in an Instagram post Monday that he was facing a 28-month suspension from the university by USC’s Student Judicial Affairs and Community Standards.

Bolden, a projected starter coming out of training camp, had yet to play this season while embroiled in what sources described as a “serious” situation involving a female that left Bolden’s fate in the hands of SJACS and the Title IX department.

Bolden alluded to an incident in his social media post:

If it wasn’t clear already, this process is handled entirely outside the athletic department at USC. As I reported weeks ago, the staff knew he wasn't returning to the team. (Thus, I had already removed Bolden from the scholarship distribution chart.)

The Trojans will have just three safeties going into 2019 (four, if converted CB Chase Williams stays at that spot), but they'll have room for a full signing class in 2019.

Trojans in the NFL -- Week 5 update

Robert Woods just keeps producing for the Los Angeles Rams, catching 5 passes for 92 yards and rushing for 53 yards in a win over Seattle on Sunday.

He's now topped at least 81 receiving yards in four straight games, pushing his season total to 29 receptions for 415 yards, 3 TDs and 72 rushing yards.

Woods is on pace for 1,328 receiving yards over a full 16-game season, which would demolish his previous career-best of 781 receiving yards last year.

Here's the full rundown of how USC's former stars fared in the NFL this past week:

Sam Darnold, NY Jets: 10/22 passing for 198 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT, 3 rushes for 5 yards
Robert Woods, LA Rams: 5 catches for 92 yards, 2 rushes for 53 yards
JuJu Smith-Schuster, Pittsburgh Steelers: 4 catches for 34 yards, 1 TD
Javorius Allen, Baltimore Ravens: 8 carries for 34 yards, 6 catches for 44 yards
Nelson Agholor, Philadelphia Eagles: 4 catches for 45 yards
Rhett Ellison, NY Giants: 2 catches for 17 yards
Xavier Grimble, Pittsburgh Steelers: 1 catch for 6 yards

Leonard Williams, NY Jets: 5 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 tackles for loss, 3 QB hits
Jurrell Casey, Tennessee Titans: 5 tackles, 2 TFL
Adoree' Jackson, Tennessee Titans: 4 tackles, 1 INT
T.J. McDonald, Miami Dolphins: 6 tackles, 0.5 TFL
Devon Kennard, Detroit Lions: 1 tackle, 1 sack, 1 TFL, 1 recovered fumble, 1 QB hit
Antwaun Woods, Dallas Cowboys: 4 tackles
Nickell Robey-Coleman, LA Rams: 4 tackles, 1 TFL
Malcolm Smith, San Francisco 49ers: 4 tackes, 0.5 TFL
Frostee Rucker, Oakland Raiders: 3 tackles, 1 TFL
Nick Perry, Green Bay Packers: 3 tackles
Clay Matthews, Green Bay Packers: 1 tackle
Uchenna Nwosu, LA Chargers: 1 tacke, 1 QB hit

Don’t look now Tom Herman suddenly becoming a good coach.

Where are all those people who insisted since Clay beat him and he struggled the first year to implement his system that he was a bad coach and Clay was superior.

The lesson with Petersen is if someone excels at high levels of coaching they will have a good not 100% but good shot at succeeding. If someone is mediocre or not that good they won’t barring some luck become a great coach. When someone shows you who they are believe it. Clay has shown for years who he is. Herman has too.

Football Pro Football Focus' weekly USC notes ...

While there are no game grades or snap counts to evaluate this week, Pro Football Focus' Aaron Bloch sent over some notes related to the Colorado matchup this week:

"With the USC coming off a bye week, we can look back to their performance in their win against Colorado from the 2017 season. A very welcome detail for Trojans fans from a year ago was the performance of the USC offensive line in pass protection. When they last played Colorado, the team posted their highest pass blocking grade since Week 4 of the 2016 season, with a score of 91.7. In 37 dropbacks by QB Sam Darnold, the offensive line only allowed one single pressure, something the 2018 group will hope to repeat for QB JT Daniels. Chris Brown and Andrew Vorhees both posted season-high pass blocking grades of 86.9 and 86.6, respectively, while RT Chuma Edoga posted a very respectable 83.5 pass blocking grade himself.

"The 2017 clash against Colorado resulted in the Ajene Harris show. Colorado tested Harris all game long, targeting him in coverage 13x. However, this matchup yielded few positive results for the Buffaloes. Harris intercepted 2 passes, broke up another 2 passes, and allowed just 42 yards on 6 catches for a 14.4 NFL passer rating against him. Harris also recorded 6 tackles, two of which were classified as run stops, and even added a sack rushing off the edge. Harris' overall grade of 91.4 vs Colorado currently stands as a career-best for him and was the highest single game defensive graded earned by a USC Trojan over the course of the 2017 season."

Recruiting More Max Williams analysis

Adam talked to Rivals recruiting analyst Adam Gorney over the weekend for his thoughts on USC cornerback commit Max Williams, and Gorney followed up today with some further analysis and video on Williams.

Also, check out Chris Steele's thoughts on his fellow CB commit.

I think we've got this one covered from all angles.
