Football They Said It: QB Jack Sears

We caught up with quarterback Jack Sears last week. The redshirt freshman opened up on how he's adjusted his delivery, the upcoming QB battle and the public's fascination with teammate and challenger JT Daniels.

--on if he’s still tinkering with his delivery
“Yeah, that was my main focus in the beginning of the summer, just fine tuning little things. It wasn’t anything too serious, but I figured out a little tweak and it’s helped me a lot. I feel like I'm throwing the ball a lot better, a lot more consistent, and coming out a bit faster.

--on if a quicker release was the objective
“Yeah, quicker and consistency were the two focuses when I went back, trying to fine tune it. … It’s not like I’m trying to redefine my motion at all, it’s literally like one little tweak, one little throwing thought, to kind of just help quicken everything up. … Just a little bit less takeback, a bit more straight to the throw.”

--on what he’s working on aside from his release
“I wasn’t so much trying to work on my release, it was a little thing. I've always been confident in my throwing motion. Just as a quarterback mentally you always have to understand the playbook, and there's so much to our playbook that you're always going to be learning. So that's kind of what I'm trying to do, keep learning.”

--on if it bothers him that the public at large seems to have already anointed JT Daniels as the future starter and is pulling for him most
“I can’t really look too much into that. It’s not really my place, and everybody has a job and everybody's doing their part, and I just got to focus on what I can do.”

--on how aware he is of that narrative
“From what I’ve heard. I try to stay out of it. It’s gonna be fun; coaches are going to make the decision, we're going to compete, and I'm going to control what I can control.”

--on his offseason focus outside of PRPs
“Just trying to get up in the film room as much as possible. My course load kinda impacted that in the beginning but then really hitting it hard in the afternoon and night, throwing with the guys when I can, and then those morning workout have been pushing us so I think the coaches have been doing a great job getting us physically in shape and it's our job as players getting mentally in shape when the coaches aren't here.”

--on whether he already feels the tension of the upcoming QB competition in training camp
“I don’t think there’s tension, just kinda excitement. We had a great summer as a group. I think we've really come together and we're having fun out there, helping each other and just being competitive in PRP, so fall camp’s going to heighten that and make it that much more enjoyable and probably more fun to watch.”

--on if there will be more urgency with each rep, now that they’ll be divided three ways
“Just make the most of each rep. That’s what we try to do in the spring, that's what we're trying to do in camp, we’re gonna try to do it in the season.”

--on the difference between training camp and spring, when Helton made it clear he was not going to choose a starter
“It’s just one more guy, it’s competition, it’s gonna make us better players.”

--on what he looks forward to most in the QB battle
“I think I’m kinda just looking forward to fall camp, just ball for a couple weeks, no classes, just being around the team from 6 a.m. to whenever we get out, so it’ll be fun.”

--on if anything else feels different in his preparation this year aside from the obvious absence of Sam Darnold
“I’ve just been here. I’ve learned a lot about the little things. It’s more about the little things that you do whether it's recovery or film, or just watching yourself and trying to figure out what you can do better each day. That’s the biggest thing. You can’t think you’re gonna have these huge changes right away. It's going to take time, you have to enjoy that process.”

--on his current weight
“Between 210-213."

--on what he weighed last year
“I was 200.”

Recruiting 2020 QB Bryce Young sets commitment date

Class of 2020 Mater Dei QB Bryce Young tweeted Sunday that he will announce his commitment on July 25, also his birthday. He recently listed USC, Oklahoma, Texas, Washington, Penn State and Alabama as his top six, though the Trojans are considered the favorite.

I know the staff is high on Young and has been much more engaged with him than fellow 2020 standout D.J. Uiagalelei, the consensus top QB prospect in the country.

Recruiting Texas A&M commit wants to visit USC

I just spoke to a source close to Texas A&M linebacker commit Andre White.

White is an outside linebacker from Harrisburg, Pa. who picked up a scholarship offer from USC back in March shortly after visiting USC's campus.

Despite his trip to USC, White committed to Texas A&M before the beginning of May.

But apparently, he's not done considering USC.

According to this source, White wants to take another visit to USC. He was considering an official visit in June but it fell through. White is now considering a visit to campus in August but nothing is set in stone yet.

When asked why White wants to visit USC again, the source said this:

"Andre's family wants to make sure he's making the best decision. His father and mother are okay with it and Andre is also on board."

How are our grads doing in the Pro Summer league?….

Always a first step in evaluating the new players, the four major departures from USC were Metu, Melton, McLaughlin and Elijah Stewart. There are varying degrees of success so far after the first 3 games in Las Vegas. At least 2 more games remains in the PSL "playoff system". I'll upgrade after that.

In order of contributions so far….

1. DeAnthony Melton….taken early second round and doing well across the board for Houston Rockets summer team: 3 games- 29 min. per game average- 16.3ppg (#1 on team)- 42% FG- 7 RPG (#2)-3 apg (#2)- 2.7 stpg (#1)- 0.7 blkpg. He's impressing a lot of watchers. Wish the FBI didn’t take his last year away from us.

2. Chimezie Metu….also taken early second round and doing pretty well for San Antonio Spurs summer team: 2 games- 23.5 min. per game average- 12.5 ppg (#5)- 55% FG- 6.5 RPG (#2)-2 apg- 0.5 stpg - 0.5 blkpg.

3. J McLaughlin….signed as free agent for Brooklyn Nets summer team: 3 games- 19.7 min. per game average- 7.3ppg- 38% FG- 1.7 RPG -4.7 apg (#2)- 1.0 stpg- 0.3 blkpg. He's struggling a little with the size of opposing players.

4 Elijah Stewart. FA signing with the Indian summer team. No stats so far.

One Glaring Depth Issue for USC!

Who will back up Cam Smith? If he goes down, we don't have anyone with any experience behind cam. You can't have a walk on at the position. Another top guy needs to take some reps there and maybe play the position a little during blowouts to make sure we are ready is smith is not available for some reason. Maybe a versatile player like iosefa. A coupe of other candidates might be Levi Jones, John Houston or possibly Katoa. But katoa has never even played a down. Obviously there are some guys with no experience at all that could learn the position, but we don't want them running the entire defense if cam goes down for an extended period of time. It seems like PG, Solomon T or katoa would be ideal candidates to fulfill that role when Cam leaves, but right now we need someone who at least knows the defense somewhat. Maybe Falaniko could slide over although he is pretty slight of build. My two top backups would be Iosefa AND Levi Jones.

Football Debate of the Day: Who should start?

My question today is simple: With what we know right now, who would you want to see start at every position in the season opener vs. UNLV?

Here's my lineup:

QB: J.T. Daniels
RB: Stephen Carr
WR: Tyler Vaughns
WR: Michael Pittman
WR (slot): Amon-Ra St. Brown
TE: Josh Falo
LT: Clayton Johnston
LG: Chris Brown
C: Toa Lobendahn
RG: Andrew Vorhees
RT: Chuma Edoga

NT: Brandon Pili
DE: Christian Rector
SOLB: Jordan Iosefa
MLB: Cam Smith
WLB: Palaie Gaoteote
Pred: Porter Gustin
CB: Biggie Marshall
CB: Jonathan Lockett
Nickel: Ajene Harris
FS: Marvell Tell
SS: Ykili Ross

Early PAC12 predictions….

This is the month when all those pundit magazines make predictions about NCAA teams. Here's an early look gleaned from Street and Smith, Athlon, Lindys and Steele's. And some comments on them….In general they were in lock step with all 6 teams in the P12 North division and with the top 2 in the P12 North division. Nationally there was much less consensus.

PAC12 North-

Washington- PAC 12: #1unanimous. National Ranking: 4-8. Top 20 units in QB,RB, OL, LB, DB. 1 P12 losses projected. Best balanced team?

Stanford-PAC 12: #2 unanimous. National Ranking: 13-18. Top 20 units in OL, RB, REC, LB, DB, ST 3 P12 losses projected.

Oregon-PAC 12: #3 unanimous. National Ranking: 22-24. Top 20 units in QB,OL, RB, LB, DB. 4 P12 losses projected.

California-PAC 12: #4 unanimous. National Ranking: 49-58. Top 20 unit in REC. 5 P12 losses projected.

Wash. St. -PAC 12: #5 unanimous. National Ranking: 55-68. Top 20 units -none. 6 P12 losses projected.

Ore. St. -PAC 12: #6 unanimous. National Ranking: 91-114. Top 20 units -none. 9 P12 losses projected. Sounds like a good road trip if you don't mind rain.

PAC12 South-

USC-PAC 12: #1 unanimous (all 4). National Ranking: 15-21. Top 20 units in REC, OL, RB, LB, DB, ST. 2 P12 losses projected. USC good across board but QB ? holds back enthusiasm.

Utah-PAC 12: #2 unanimous. National Ranking: 22-32. Top 20 units in DB, ST. 4 P12 losses projected.

Arizona-PAC 12: #3-4. National Ranking: 32-48. Top 20 units in QB. 4 P12 losses projected.

UCLA-PAC 12: #3-6. National Ranking: 44-59. Top 20 units -none. 5 P12 losses projected. Ranked all over the map. QB and OL are doubts here.

Colorado-PAC 12: # 4-6. National Ranking: 47-73. Top 20 units in ST. 5 P12 losses projected.

ASU-PAC 12: #5-6. National Ranking: 50-68. Top 20 unit in QB. 6 P12 loss projected.

The above isn't unreasonable but I disagree in part and will show that next month.

As for the 3 OOC Teams played by USC:

Notre Dame- National Ranking: 8-15. Top 20 units in LB, DB. We play them at home.

Texas National Ranking: 10-27. Top 20 units in QB,REC, LB, DB. All over the map. Tough game there.

UNLV National Ranking: 94-104. Top 20 units none.

Personal note...

My aunt was recently diagnosed with terminal cancer. I haven't been around as much as I should be for her because of the recent camp season. Now is the time to do it. I plan to travel to see her soon and spend a few days with her before football gets serious in August. I'm just waiting to hear some dates that works for her and then I plan to disappear for a few days.

I will keep you all posted when that's happening. It could be as soon as tomorrow so now is the time to post.

I know it's coming, because you're all so kind to me whenever I'm dealing with family illnesses or other issues (like my shoulder which I still haven't dealt with entirely lol), so thank you all so much in advance for the kindness you will show in this thread. I might not come back to it because I don't want to think about this. So please don't take that as me not being appreciative of you all. I am.

I also apologize for any anger I might have displayed over the last month, or really over my time as publisher here because it's a very similar feeling with my father's death and my cousin's death, because I haven't been doing too well with this. I'm just not a happy person right now and it really didn't hit me until this happened to my aunt. So I haven't been doing the best with criticism lately. I apologize because it's not fair for me to push that all off on all of you.

Again, thank you all for being understanding and for all your support.
