Kevin Porter Jr -- SIAP, but damn

SC's top basketball signee Kevin Porter Jr (#32 overall on Rivals) looks like the next James Harden. Explosive, highly skilled, shoots the three well (also a lefty). In his season opener alone, he was reported to have logged 44 points, 22 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals.

With the attrition from this year's team, I could see him coming in and making a big impact next year. Check out the highlights below including the play at 0:28, which included a shout-out from Kevin Garnett

So where did the Elite OL & DL recruits end up?

I'm basing this on the Rivals 250 and then sorting this by position. OL = OG, OT, C; DL = DT, WDE, SDE. I only counted teams that got 4 or more of the elite linemen.

The 1st number = OL, the 2nd number = DL. Then Total #. Personally, I am biased toward Linemen determining your future chances at being in the Final 4 CFP:
  1. Georgia = 4/3, 7 Total
  2. Ohio State = 3/4, 7 Total
  3. Oklahoma = 2/3, 5 Total
  4. Alabama = 1/4, 5 Total
  5. USC = 2/2, 4 Total (not too bad given the limited # of schollies)
  6. Clemson = 1/3, 4 Total
  7. Penn State = 2/2 4 Total

Walk-on's Matter

These walk-on's that Coach Helton is bringing in matter! These kids all played HS football a high levels and are athletes. If nothing else, they will be invaluable on the scout team in practices, obviously because the tougher the scout team, the better the practice.

And more than one of them, historically, will move up to the 85 man roster, and even see the field. Don't make the mistake of simply shrugging your shoulders when you read of a new walk on commit.

And the winner is...

First off, I want to thank everyone who participated in our Signing Day predictions contest. Every entry had at least five of the seven signees correct. Unfortunately, no one had a perfect list (i.e. all seven signees and no one listed that didn't sign).

The most accurate submission came from Alex3000, who nailed all seven and listed John Jackson Jr., with his lone blemish being that he included Michael Ezeike. (FWIW, Swanson predicted the exact same group of scholarship players, but someone I trust tells me he's not getting a prize.)

Alex, you are our winner and will receive a copy of All the Pieces Matter: The Inside Story of The Wire. (Swanson will be contacting you soon.)

Congrats, Alex, and thanks again to all who played!!

USC GA leaving for Illinois

Defensive graduate assistant Austin Clark is leaving USC to be the defensive line coach at Illinois.

The promotion is the result of strong referrals, relationships and results. USC’s defensive line play has shown steady improvement over the past two seasons under Kenechi Udeze.

Clark will now work under DC Hardy Nickerson, who, like Udeze, is an alum of Verbum Dei High School. Also, Clark played for Clancy Pendergast at Cal alongside Nickerson’s son.
